On the electrical discharge in d.c. and high frequency fields simultaneously

Summary When a d.c. and a h.f. field are perpendicularly superposed in a electrical discharge (p 10–10^–4 mm Hg), three types of discharge can exist, classified from the standpoint of d.c. conduction: (1) d.c. glow type, d.c.-dominant discharge with additional ionization by h.f. field; (2) space chargelimited type, the same as the conduction in the floating double probe in a plasma produced by h.f. field; (3) an intermediate stage between the first and second types, herein referred to as transition type. According to our analysis of the transition type at low pressure, the value of in high electric fields can be deduced from the measurement.     

α,α‐Dibromotoluene as a monomer for poly (substituted methylene) synthesis: Magnesium‐mediated polycondensation of α,α‐dibromotoluene and magnesium/copper‐mediated copolycondensation of α,α‐dibromotoluene with 1,6‐dibromohexane

α,α‐Dibromotoluene 1 was found to be polymerized by the reaction with excess Mg to give poly(phenylmethylene)s 2 , whose main chains were partially dehydrogenated to carbon–carbon double bonds (C?C). The C?Cs in 2 can be brominated by treatment with Br₂. The polymerization mechanism was presumed to include the formation of Grignard reagents of various species with benzylic C? Br bonds and the nucleophilic attacks of the Grignard reagents to various compounds with benzylic C? Br bonds. Copolymerization of 1 with dichlorodimethylsilane successfully proceeded. Mg/Cu‐mediated copolycondensation of 1 with 1,6‐dibromohexane proceeded to give polymers that have similar compositions to those of random copolymers of ethylene and styrene. © 2006Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Die Löslichkeit von aromatischen Verbindungen mit polaren Gruppen in Wasser

Zusammenfassung Die Löslichkeiten folgender Verbindungen wurden in Wasser bei 5°-Intervallen von 0° bis 40° bestimmt; Anilin, Mtrobenzol, Chlorbenzol,-Oxynaphthalin und-Nitronaphthalin. Aus diesen Ergebnissen wurden die thermodynamischen Parameter für den Lösungsprozeß der reinen flüssigen Verbindungen in Wasser berechnet. Das Resultat wurde mit Hilfe des Begriffs der Eisberge erklärt.Beim Benzol, Anilin und Chlorbenzol waren die Lösungswärmen negativ bei niedrigeren Temperaturen und wurden mit steigender Temperatur positiver. Dagegen traten beim Nitrobenzol,-Oxynaphthalin und-Nitronaphthalin stets die positiven Lösungswärmen auf. Dies sollte auf die großen intermolekularen Kräfte in der reinen Flüssigkeit zurückzuführen sein.     

Heavy muon as a possible cause of two anomalies

We propose to explain two observed anomalies that suggest extension of the minimal gauge scheme, the eμ production in the e⁺e^? reaction and the anomalous y-distribution in $\text{ν}{}_{\mathrm{\mu }}$ reactions, as being caused by a single object, a heavy muon. With more accurate neutrino data this explanation can readily be distinguished from that of a new quark production.     

Dynamic properties of angle-dependent high-order harmonic generation from coherently rotating molecules

High-order harmonic generation from coherently rotating N2 and O2 molecules has been observed for different alignment angles in a pump and probe experiment using femtosecond laser pulses. The results obtained are in excellent agreement with those calculated using a recently developed theory, which represent the characteristic properties predicted for angle-dependent harmonic generation. It is shown that polarization geometry and alignment distribution play essential roles in potential applications to probe electronic structure and dynamics of molecular systems.     

Development of a new file search system for nuclear magnetic resonance spectra: Production of an Enlarged Data Base and Search Test

A practical search system for proton n.m.r. spectra is reported. The coding rules and search algorithms are described in detail. Data for 8000 spectra have been converted into a computer-readable file from printed charts. Several search tests are used to evaluate the usefulness of the search system, and various effects of experimental conditions such as different instruments, frequencies and solvents on recall efficiency are described. The results presented indicate that the system should be applicable to routine analytical work.     

Stereocontrolled synthesis of 7-hydroxy- and 7-acetoxy-PGI2: New stable PGI2 analogues

Stable analogues of PGI₂, 7-hydroxy- and 7-acetoxy-PGI₂, were synthesized from protected PGI₂ methyl ester $\text{1b}$via sulfoxides $\text{6a}$, $\text{6b}$ through stereocontrolled sulfoxide-sulfenate rearrangement.
