Transfer hydrogenation of imines with carboxyl-tailed benzothiazoline as readily removable hydrogen donor

A benzothiazoline bearing 4-carboxyphenyl group at 2-position was developed as an efficient hydrogen donor for the transfer hydrogenation reaction. Introduction of the carboxyl group significantly facilitated the removal of the residual benzothiazoline and benzothiazole by washing with aqueous basic solution. The present approach provides a convenient and straightforward access to various amines with broad substrate scope and in good yields.     

CO2 laser Stark spectroscopy of the Coriolis-coupled ν2 and ν5 bands of CD3Br

The ν₂ (CD₃ symmetrical deformation) and ν₅ (CD₃ degenerate deformation) fundamental bands of CD₃Br were studied by 9.4- and 10.4-μm CO₂ laser Stark spectroscopy. Stark resonances originating from 28 and 53 rovibrational transitions of the ν₂ and ν₅ bands, respectively, were assigned for each of the isotopic species, CD₃⁷⁹Br and CD₃⁸¹Br. These two bands were simultaneously analyzed with explicit inclusion of the ν₂-ν₅ Coriolis interaction, yielding precise molecular constants in the ν₂ and ν₅ excited states as well as the Coriolis coupling constant. We define aD-convex equilibrium point and prove that aD-convex equilibrium point exists in this game system. A light-emitting diode fabricated from horse-heart cytochrome c

We have fabricated a light-emitting diode from horse-heart cytochrome c and measured the electro-luminescence (EL) spectra. The spectra exhibit broad peaks around 530 and 690 nm, and a weak shoulder around 410 nm. The EL spectra are completely different from the photo-luminescence spectra previously reported. The appearance of the 690 nm emission band suggests the charge-transfer between the iron and the axial methionine ligand plays a crucial role in the electrical conduction in the cytochrome c film.

Current-driven resonant excitation of magnetic vortices

A magnetic vortex core in a ferromagnetic circular nanodot has a resonance frequency originating from the confinement of the vortex core. By the micromagnetic simulation including the spin-transfer torque, we show that the vortex core can be resonantly excited by an ac (spin-polarized) current through the dot and that the resonance frequency can be tuned by the dot shape. The resistance measurement under the ac current successfully detects the resonance at the frequency consistent with the simulation.

Changes in Hip and Knee Muscle Strength in Patients Following Total Hip Arthroplasty

Objective: To investigate changes in hip and knee muscle strength in patients before and after total hip arthroplasty (THA) in comparison with that in healthy adults. Methods: The study included 21 women who underwent unilateral THA (THA group) and 21 age-matched healthy women (healthy group). Maximal isometric strengths of hip flexors, extensors, and abductors, and knee extensors and flexors were measured before surgery and at 4 weeks and 6 months after surgery. Results: Before surgery, muscle strength on both sides, except for hip flexors on the uninvolved side, was significantly lower in the THA group than the corresponding muscle strength in the healthy group. Up to 6 months after THA, strength of all muscle groups on both sides was significantly improved compared with their preoperative status, although the knee extensor strength on the involved side temporarily worsened at 4 weeks. However, the strength of hip extensors and knee extensors on the involved side, and hip abductors on both sides in the THA group remained below that in the healthy group. Conclusions: Our results suggest that rehabilitation specialists should consider increasing the focus on the uninvolved side and encourage patients to continue strength training beyond 6 months after surgery.

Observation of the Fano-Kondo antiresonance in a quantum wire with a side-coupled quantum dot

We have observed the Fano-Kondo antiresonance in a quantum wire with a side-coupled quantum dot. In a weak coupling regime, dips due to the Fano effect appeared. As the coupling strength increased, conductance in the regions between the dips decreased alternately. From the temperature dependence and the response to the magnetic field, we conclude that the conductance reduction is due to the Fano-Kondo antiresonance. At a Kondo valley with the Fano parameter q approximately 0, the phase shift is locked to pi/2 against the gate voltage when the system is close to the unitary limit in agreement with theoretical predictions by Gerland et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 3710 (2000)].

The infrared spectrum of doubly deuterated methane CH₂D₂has been recorded in the region from 1900 to 2400 cm⁻¹at almost Doppler-limited resolution by using two high-resolution Fourier transform spectrometers. The vibrational bands observed include 2ν₄, ν₄+ ν₇, 2ν₇, ν₂, ν₈, ν₄+ ν₉, and ν₇+ ν₉, which were analyzed by taking into account Coriolis and Fermi interactions among them and also those with ν₄+ ν₅, ν₃+ ν₇, and ν₅+ ν₇. Most of the centrifugal distortion constants were constrained to appropriate values, while the vibrational term value and three rotational constants in each of the seven excited states were adjusted along with Coriolis and Fermi interaction parameters by the least-squares analysis of the observed spectrum. The vibration–rotation interaction constants α_sthus determined for the ν₂and ν₈states were combined with those of other fundamental states already published to calculate the equilibrium C–H distance.
