Amperometric biosensor based on reductive H2O2 detection using pentacyanoferrate-bound polymer for creatinine determination

Pentacyanoferrate-bound poly(1-vinylimidazole) (PVI[Fe(CN)₅]) was selected as a mediator for amperometric creatinine determination based on the reductive H₂O₂ detection. Creatinine amidohydrolase (CNH), creatine amidohydrolase (CRH), sarcosine oxidase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and PVI[Fe(CN)₅] were crosslinked with poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE) on a glassy carbon (GC) electrode for a creatinine biosensor fabrication. Reduction current was monitored at −0.1 V in the presence of creatinine and O₂. It is revealed that PVI[Fe(CN)₅] is suitable as a mediator for a bioelectrocatalytic reaction of POD, since PVI[Fe(CN)₅] neither reacts with reactants nor works as an electron acceptor of SOD. The amounts of PVI[Fe(CN)₅], PEGDGE, and enzymes were optimized toward creatinine detection. Nafion as a protecting film successfully prevented the enzyme layer from interferences. The detection limit and linear range in creatinine determination were 12 μM and 12–500 μM (R² = 0.993), respectively, and the sensitivity was 11 mA cm⁻² M⁻¹, which is applicable for urine creatinine tests. The results of the creatinine determination for four urine samples measured with this proposed method were compared with Jaffe method, and a good correlation was obtained between the results.     

Mössbauer Spectra of FePS3-Cobaltocene Intercalation Compound

Abstract

Mössbauer spectra of the FePS₃-cobaltocene intercalation compound were measured in the temperature range of 300K to 10K. The spectra, distinct from those of pure FePS₃, suggest the charge transfer from cobaltocene to Fe-S antibonding orbitals of the FePS₃ host lattice.     

Dibenzylmagnesium-Initiated Anionic Oligomerizations of trans-Stilbene, 1,1-Diphenylethylene,and α-Methylstyrene in Hexamethylphosphortriamide

trans-Stilbene, 1, 1-diphenylethylene, and α-methylstyrene were allowed to react with dibenzylmagnesium to form their oligomers in hexamethylphosphortriamide (HMPA). One and two molecules of stilbene and 1, 1-diphenylethylene were incorporated into the magnesium carbon bond, and the carbanions obtained in HMPA were stable in analogy with the anionic living polymer having alkali cation as the gegenion in eithers. Intense coloration was observed during the reaction between α-methylstyrene and dibenzylmagnesium as well as in the case of stilbene and 1, 1-diphenylethylene. The low molecular weight products which were formed after a long time in the reaction between α-methylstyrene and dibenzylmagnesium were found to have no magnesium-carbon bond. It was considered that the cleavage of the propagating chain occurred gradually after the rapid propagation had proceeded to consume the monomer.     

Structure and function studies on enzymes with a catalytic carboxyl group(s): from ribonuclease T1 to carboxyl peptidases

A group of enzymes, mostly hydrolases or certain transferases, utilize one or a few side-chain carboxyl groups of Asp and/or Glu as part of the catalytic machinery at their active sites. This review follows mainly the trail of studies performed by the author and his colleagues on the structure and function of such enzymes, starting from ribonuclease T₁, then extending to three major types of carboxyl peptidases including aspartic peptidases, glutamic peptidases and serine-carboxyl peptidases.     

Synthesis and Self‐Assembly of Cyclic 2,7‐Anthrylene Ethynylene 1,3‐Phenylene Ethynylene Trimer with a Planar Conformation

Cyclic arylene ethynylene hexamer 1 , composed of alternating 2,7‐anthrylene ethynylene units and meta‐phenylene ethynylene units, was synthesized. It shows C₃ symmetry and possesses a flat and rigid conformation with a large equilateral triangle‐like cavity. Macrocycle 1 self‐associates through π–π stacking interactions between the anthracene‐containing macrocyclic aromatic cores with indefinite‐association constant K_E=6980 m ^?1 in CDCl₃ at 303 K. Macrocycle 1 also self‐assembles into π‐stacked nanofibers in the drop‐cast film.     

Three‐arm star block copolymers of aromatic polyether and polystyrene from chain‐growth condensation polymerization,atom transfer radical polymerization,and click reaction

Well‐defined (AB)₃ type star block copolymer consisting of aromatic polyether arms as the A segment and polystyrene (PSt) arms as the B segment was prepared using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), chain‐growth condensation polymerization (CGCP), and click reaction. ATRP of styrene was carried out in the presence of 2,4,6‐tris(bromomethyl)mesitylene as a trifunctional initiator, and then the terminal bromines of the polymer were transformed to azide groups with NaN₃. The azide groups were converted to 4‐fluorobenzophenone moieties as CGCP initiator units by click reaction. However, when CGCP was attempted, a small amount of unreacted initiator units remained. Therefore, the azide‐terminated PSt was then used for click reaction with alkyne‐terminated aromatic polyether, obtained by CGCP with an initiator bearing an acetylene unit. Excess alkyne‐terminated aromatic polyether was removed from the crude product by means of preparative high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to yield the (AB)₃ type star block copolymer (M_n = 9910, M_w/M_n = 1.10). This star block copolymer, which contains aromatic polyether segments with low solubility in the shell unit, exhibited lower solubility than A₂B or AB₂ type miktoarm star copolymers. In addition, the obtained star block copolymer self‐assembled to form spherical aggregates in solution and plate‐like structures in film. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
