Anisotropic catalytic activity of the orientation controlled Nd2NiO4 + δ/YSZ hetero-epitaxial system for SOFC cathode

Electrode–electrolyte hetero-epitaxial systems for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) with two different configuration of Nd₂NiO_4 + δ(110)//YSZ(100) and Nd₂NiO_4 + δ(100)//YSZ(110) were successfully fabricated by pulsed laser deposition. Thin films of Nd₂NiO_4 + δ approximately 20 nm thick were grown on a commercial single crystal of YSZ. The preferred two-dimensional diffusion paths of the oxide ions were perpendicular to the substrate for both configurations and showed oxygen reduction capability different from each other. This opens up new research direction focusing on the details of anisotropic catalytic activity of SOFC cathode depending on the crystalline surface.     

Wavelength-tunable excited-state absorption and optical limiting effects in the Q band region based on silicon phthalocyanine oligomers

Optical limiting effects of silicon phthalocyanine (SiPc) oligomers have been examined in the Q band region in order to demonstrate a novel concept for controlling the wavelength of optical limiting effects.     

Noise reduction by dynamic signal preemphasis

In this work we propose an approach to reduce the digitization noise for a given dynamic range, i.e., the number of bits, of an analog to digital converter used in an NMR receiver. In this approach, the receiver gain is dynamically increased so that the free induction decay is recorded in such an emphasized way that the decaying signal is digitized using as many number of bits as possible, and at the stage of data processing, the original signal profile is restored by applying the apodization that compensates the effect of the preemphasis. This approach, which we call APodization after Receiver gain InCrement during Ongoing sequence with Time (APRICOT), is performed in a solid-state system containing a pair of (13)C spins, one of which is fully isotopically labeled and the other is naturally abundant. It is demonstrated that the exceedingly smaller peak buried in the digitization noise in the conventional approach can be revealed by employing APRICOT.     

Formation mechanism of element distribution in glass under femtosecond laser irradiation

We report on the formation mechanism of element distribution in glass under high-repetition-rate femtosecond laser irradiation. We simultaneously focused two beams of femtosecond laser pulses inside a glass and confirmed the formation of characteristically shaped element distributions. The results of the numerical simulation in which we considered concentration- and temperature-gradient-driven diffusions were in excellent qualitative agreement with the experimental results, indicating that the main driving force is the sharp temperature gradient. Since the composition of a glass affects its refractive index, absorption, and luminescence property, the results in this study provide a framework to fabricate a functional optical device such as optical circuits with a high-repetition-rate femtosecond laser.     

The first Chern class and conformal area for a twistor holomorphic immersion

We obtain an inequality involving the first Chern class of the normal bundle and the conformal area for a twistor holomorphic surface. Using this inequality, we can improve an inequality obtained by T. Friedrich for the Euler class of the normal bundle of a twistor holomorphic surface in the four-dimensional space form. Moreover, as a corollary, we see that the area of a superminimal surface in the unit sphere is an integer multiple of $2 \pi $ , which is essentially proved by E. Calabi.     

Closed Curves in E 2 and S 2 Whose Total Squared Curvatures and Almost Minimal

The total squared curvature of a closed plane curve is minimized by a covering of a circle, if the rotation number of the curve is not zero. We measure the closeness of a closed plane curve to a circle by the difference of its total squared curvature from the minimum. A similar result is obtained for a simple closed curve in the 2-sphere.     

Nonlinear Sigma Models in (1+2) Dimensions and an Infinite Number of Conserved Currents

In this Letter, we treat nonlinear sigma models such as the C P¹-model, Q P¹-model, etc. in 1+2 dimensions. For submodels of such models, we definitely construct an infinite number of nontrivial conserved currents. Our result is a generalization of Alvarez, Ferreira and Guillen.
