Highly accurate and precise multielement determination of environmental samples by means of photon activation using the internal standard method

In order to examine effective applications of the newly developed internal standard method, determinations of Cr, Co, Ni, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Cs, Ce and Pb in three environmental materials, such as pond, lake and estuarine sediments, have been tried by means of photon activation. In these examinations, some major constituent elements in the above sediments were properly used as excellent and effective internal standards. In consequence, it was confirmed that highly accurate and precise determinations of the above 13 elements were achieved easily and favourably.     

3,3-Dimethoxypropylsulfonyl Group: A new versatile protecting and activating group for amine synthesis

3,3-Dimethoxypropylsulfonyl (Dimps) chloride was prepared and used as a new versatile sulfonating agent for ammonia, primary and secondary amines to afford corresponding Dimps-amides in excellent yields. The resulting N-nonsubstituted and N-monosubstituted Dimps-amides, activated amines, were alkylated satisfactorily under new Mitsunobu conditions. The Dimps group was removed by treatment in aqueous solution under acidic followed by basic conditions. Furthermore, epilachnene, the defensive droplets from the Mexican bean beetle, Epilachna varivestis, was synthesized utilizing this Dimps methodology in short steps.     

Coarse Metal Powder-Assisted pulsed CO2 Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy for the Direct Determination of Heavy Metals in Soil

A novel method of laser-induced plasma spectroscopy utilizing a pulsed transversely excited atmospheric CO₂ laser has been developed for the high-sensitivity determination of heavy metals in soil. A coarse metal powder was used to trap the soil and to assist with plasma generation. When the CO₂ laser (10.6?µm, 1.5?J, 200?ns) was irradiated on the metal and soil powder, a high-temperature and long-lifetime luminous plasma was induced. Fine particles of soil were dissociated and were excited in the plasma region. The method was used for the rapid determination of Cr, Pb, and Hg in loam. The limits of detection for Cr, Pb, and Hg were approximately 0.8, 15, and 0.7?mg/kg, respectively.     

Effective PCA for high-dimension, low-sample-size data with noise reduction via geometric representations

In this article, we propose a new estimation methodology to deal with PCA for high-dimension, low-sample-size (HDLSS) data. We first show that HDLSS datasets have different geometric representations depending on whether a ρ-mixing-type dependency appears in variables or not. When the ρ-mixing-type dependency appears in variables, the HDLSS data converge to an n-dimensional surface of unit sphere with increasing dimension. We pay special attention to this phenomenon. We propose a method called the noise-reduction methodology to estimate eigenvalues of a HDLSS dataset. We show that the eigenvalue estimator holds consistency properties along with its limiting distribution in HDLSS context. We consider consistency properties of PC directions. We apply the noise-reduction methodology to estimating PC scores. We also give an application in the discriminant analysis for HDLSS datasets by using the inverse covariance matrix estimator induced by the noise-reduction methodology.

The structures of xantholides A and B were deduced on the basis of IR and NMR spectra, and confirmed by X-ray analysis. Xantholide A inhibited the larval growth of Drosophila melanogaster.     

Ample and Spanned Rank-2 Vector Bundles with k-Jet Ample Determinant on Algebraic Surfaces

We investigate ample and spanned rank-2 vector bundles E with k-jet ample determinant on algebraic surfaces S. In paticular, we classify such polarized pairs (S,E) with small second Chern class. The case of c_2(E)=k+1 is a generalization of the result of Ballico and Lanteri.     

Copper-catalyzed allylation of carbonyl derivatives using allyl(2-pyridyl)silanes

[reaction: see text] We have developed an efficient copper-catalyzed allylation of carbonyl derivatives using allyl(2-pyridyl)silanes, in which the strong directing effect of the 2-pyridyl group was observed. A useful synthesis and allylation of substituted allyl(2-pyridyl)silanes is also described.     

Microbial conversion of curcumin into colorless hydroderivatives by the endophytic fungus Diaporthe sp. associated with Curcuma longa

We investigated the microbial conversion of curcumin (1) using endophytic fungi associated with the rhizome of Curcuma longa (Zingiberaceae). We found that Diaporthe sp., an endophytic filamentous fungus, converts curcumin (1) into four colorless derivatives, namely (3R,5R)-tetrahydrocurcumin (2), a novel (3R,5S)-hexahydrocurcumin (3) named neohexahydrocurcumin, (3S,5S)-octahydrocurcumin (4) and meso-octahydrocurcumin (5).
