Isolation and structure elucidation of genuine oat phytoalexin,avenalumin I

The major phytoalexin from oat leaves has been identified as 2-[2-(4-hydroxyphenyDethenyl] -6-hydroxy-4H-3,1-benzoxazin-4-one ($\text{A}$).     

The elastic constant and molar volume of sodium and potassium germanate glasses and the germanate anomaly

The composition dependences of molar volume and elastic constants were investigated for sodium and potassium germanate glasses of composition xR₂O·GeO₂ (O < x < 0.65 in the sodium-glasses and O < x < 0.75 in the potassium-ones). The variation of the molar volume could be approximated by straight lines crossing at 0.18 and 0.16 in x in the sodium- and potassium-glasses, respectively. At these compositions the elastic constants showed maxima. With reference to the structures of several alkali germanate crystals, it was concluded that the fraction of GeO₆ units, N₆, reaches a maximum at 0.18 in x in the sodium-glasses (15.6) mol.% Na₂O) and at 0.16 in x in the potassium-glasses (13.8 mol.% K₂O). It was also considered that N₆ is not null at 0.5 but is null probably at 1.0 in x in the glasses. A network model of the germanate glasses was discussed.     

Linear transformations that are tridiagonal with respect to both eigenbases of a Leonard pair

Electrical conductivities of mixed cation glasses

The electrical conductivities of (1−x) Li₂O · x BaO · 2 SiO₂, (1−x) Na₂O · x MgO ·2 SiO₂, (1−x) Na₂O · x CaO · SiO₂ and (1−x) Na₂O · x BaO · 2SiO₂ glasses were measured at temperature ranging from room temperature to 450°C. The transport numbers for Na⁺ ion in (1−x) Na₂O · x BaO · 2 SiO₂ glasses were measured. It was found that the alkali ion carried a significant part of the current in these glasses except one that had no alkali ions, and the conductivity decreased markedly as the alkali oxide was substituted by an alkaline earth oxide. The results of conductivity measurements combined with the data hitherto reported on mixed alkali glasses led to the proposal that the so-called mixed alkali effect could be explained on the basis of the independent path model in which it is assumed that cations can move only through vacant sites left by those of the same type.     

13C nuclear magnetic resonance studies of sesquiterpenes,anisatin and neoanisatin: The structure of anisatinic acid,a novel isomerization product of anisatin

¹³C NMR spectra are reported for derivatives of toxic sesquiterpenes, anisatin (I) and neoanisatin (II). Chemical shifts for each compound have been assigned on the basis of off-resonance decoupling experiments, known chemical shift rules, and comparison of the spectra among the compounds examined. Toxic anisatin (I) is known to isomerize under mild conditions to a non-toxic compound, anisatinic acid. The structure of anisatinic acid has been determined unambiguously to be IIIa by the ¹³C NMR spectral analysis of a derivative 8 of anisatinic acid. Some aspects of the substituent effects on the ¹³C chemical shifts obtained in the present investigation are described.     

Distance degree regular graphs

In this note, inequalities between the distance degrees of distance degree regular graphs and to characterize the graphs when one of the equalities holds are proved.     

Homogeneity of a Distance-Regular Graph Which Supports a Spin Model

A spin model is a square matrix that encodes the basic data for a statistical mechanical construction of link invariants due to V.F.R. Jones. Every spin model W is contained in a canonical Bose-Mesner algebra (W). In this paper we study the distance-regular graphs whose Bose-Mesner algebra satisfies W (W). Suppose W has at least three distinct entries. We show that is 1-homogeneous and that the first and the last subconstituents of are strongly regular and distance-regular, respectively.     

Chelation of cadmium ions by phytochelatin synthase: role of the cysteine-rich C-terminal.

The interactions between Cd(2+) and the C-terminal region of phytochelatin (PC) synthase using recombinant wild-type and mutant PC synthase were studied. We show that site-directed mutagenesis of Cys residues at C(358)C(359)XXXC(363)XXC(366) motif decreases the number of Cd(2+) and other heavy metal ions interacting with the enzyme, and that the motif binds the metals discriminatingly. The optimum binding ratio of PC synthase to Cd(2+) was also determined. The findings indicate that Cys exists as a free SH residue and that it is involved in the regulation of PC enzyme activity by transferring the metals into closer proximity with the catalytic domain. These results are important in understanding heavy metal detoxification mechanisms in higher plants, a step towards phytoremediated-applications.
