Cyclic and acyclic ethers are regioselectively cleaved at less substituted α-carbon-oxygen bond in the absence of Lewis acid by the reagent system of sodium iodide and acyl chlorides.     

Synthesis of crescent aromatic oligoamides

[structures: see text] This article describes the synthetic procedures for the preparation of crescent (and helical) aromatic oligoamides developed in recent years in our laboratory. The large-scale preparation of a variety of monomers derived from various tetrasubstituted benzenes is presented. Three different strategies for constructing various oligomers consisting of meta- and meta/para-linked benzene residues are discussed. Factors affecting coupling efficiency and yields are analyzed. The developed synthetic methods have provided the basis for the preparation of longer oligomers and for the development of solid-phase synthesis.     

A new synthetic approach to phenol derivatives: use of ring-closing olefin metathesis

Phenol derivatives, which are one of the most important classes of aromatic compounds in organic chemistry, were synthesized by ruthenium-catalyzed ring-closing olefin metathesis (RCM) of 1,4,7-trien-3-ones with versatile substitution patterns. The RCM reaction for producing phenol derivatives was also successful with 1,5,7-trien-3-one as another precursor. Most of the phenols prepared here could not be obtained easily by conventional methods.     

Fluorescence enhancement by hydroperoxides based on a change in the intramolecular charge transfer character of benzofurazan

Strong fluorescence signals were observed after the reaction of novel reagents with hydroperoxides.     

Heterosubstituted allylic carbanion based stereocontrol,regio- and stereo- selective reaction of O and S substituted allylic carbanions with aldehydes

Regio- and diastereoselective reaction of oxygen and sulfur substituted allylic carbanions with aldehydes is described. Either threo or erythro isomer can be obtained predominantly or exclusively by merely choosing an additive.     

Oxygen permeability of surfactant/polymer composite films with multibilayer and inverted hexagonal structure

The permeability of oxygen through horizontally oriented multibilayer films of polyion complexes prepared from quaternary ammonium-type surfactants [CH₃(CH₂)_n-1]₂N⁺(CH₃)₂Br^?(n = 14, 16, 18), and poly(p-styrenesulfonate) or poly[2-(acrylamido)-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate], was measured in water using an oxygen electrode. The permeability depended mainly on the phase of the multibilayers. Thus, it increased abruptly (about 10-fold) near each phase transition temperature because of the fluidity enhancement of the multibilayer. Inverted hexagonal type nonbilayer films prepared from the polyion complexes and cholesterol had greater permeability (2–20-fold) than the multibilayer films in both phases. The large permeability of the nonbilayer films was attributed to the lack of a barrier such as the bilayer and lower crystallinity of the films. It was associated neither with an increase in thermal movement of the lipid surfactant molecules nor with an increase in the water content of the films by the addition of cholesterol. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
