Synthesis of polymers having a phospholipid polar group connected to a poly(oxyethylene) chain and their protein adsorption-resistance properties

New methacrylates having a phospholipid polar group which was connected to various lengths of poly(oxyethylene) chains to form a polymerizable group (MEOnPC) were synthesized. The MEOnPC could polymerize with n-butyl methacrylate (BMA) in ethanol using a conventional radical polymerization technique. The unit mole fraction of MEOnPC in the polymer corresponded to that in the feed monomer solution. The MEOnPC polymers were soluble in ethanol, insoluble in water, but swelled in water and became hydrated. On the surface of a poly(BMA) membrane coated with MEOnPC, the phosphorylcholine groups of the MEOnPC unit present were determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As a fundamental evaluation for biomedical materials, adsorption of one of the plasma proteins, fibrinogen, on acrylic beads coated with the MEOnPC polymers was evaluated. The amount of fibrinogen adsorbed on the MEOnPC polymer was smaller than that on the original acrylic beads, poly(BMA) and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate). The increase in the MEOnPC unit mole fraction in the polymer showed more effective protein adsorption-resistant properties. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Kinetic study of radical polymerization of dialkyl fumarates using electron spin resonance spectroscopy

The radical polymerization of dialkyl fumarates (DRF) bearing various ester alkyl groups was kinetically studied. The propagation and termination rate constants were determined using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The introduction of the bulky ester alkyl groups such as a tert-butyl group decreased the termination rate constant as expected. However, it has also been revealed that the bulky groups promote propagation despite the steric repulsion. The propagation rate and mechanism are discussed in relation to the propagation manner, i.e., tacticity of the polymer. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Heterogeneous continuous flow synthetic system using cyclohexane-based multiphase electrolyte solutions

The discovery that supporting electrolytes can be effectively confined in typical organic solvents in a c-Hex-based multiphase electrolyte solution has led to the development of a novel heterogeneous continuous flow synthetic system. PTFE fiber functions as a separation filter that can efficiently isolate the c-Hex phase from multiphase electrolyte solutions. This system has demonstrated both electrochemical solvating and carbon-carbon bond forming reactions. Hydrophobic substrates can be introduced into the reactor as c-Hex solutions, which are then electrochemically transformed into the target hydrophobic products that pass through the PTFE fiber as c-Hex solutions.     

The Microwave Spectrum of Methyl Formate (HCOOCH3) in the Frequency Range from 7 to 200 GHz

The rotational spectrum of methyl formate (HCOOCH₃) has been observed in the frequency range from 7 to 200 GHz. We newly assigned 1612 lines in the ground torsional state and simultaneously analyzed both A- and E-species data including previously reported lines on the basis of the internal axis method. A total of 3077 lines were fitted to a 1σ standard deviation of 139 kHz, and molecular parameters were determined.
