Stimuli sensitive polymers for drug delivery systems

Temperature sensitive and electric field sensitive hydrogels were prepared for use in modulated drug release systems. Crosslinked poly(N-isopropyl-acrylamide) and its networks, modified with hydrophobic components by copolymerization or by interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) formation, were utilized as temperature sensitive hydrogels. Indomethacin (a model solute)-release from polymer matrix and permeation through polymer membrane demonstrated “on-off” regulation with temperature fluctuation. This was the result of polymer surface properties rather than bulk swelling, as temperature was changed past the swelling transition temperature range of the polymer. The on-off regulation in an electric field was also obtained with a positively charged solute (Edrophonium chloride) release in distilled-deionized water from a matrix of crosslinked poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid-co-butyl methacrylate). This was attributed to the ion exchange between Edrophonium ion and protons produced at the anode. The swelling changes produced by local pH or ionic strength changes affected non-charged solute release.     

Characterization of tension and normally lignified wood cellulose inPopulus maximowiczii

We have investigated unlignified tension wood and normally lignified wood celluloses inPopulus maximowiczii with particular reference to the composition of two crystalline phases I/I (triclinic/ monoclinic). Four independent techniques, which enable us to detect the two phases, CP/MAS¹³C NMR, Fourier transform infrared microscopy, selected-area electron diffraction, and X-ray diffraction were applied. Because of the low crystallinity of wood celluloses, particularly in the case of celluloses in the lignified cell wall, no single method was decisive enough to be able to determine the composition of the two phases as one can with highly crystalline materials. The I dominant structure (monoclinic crystal type) was, however, preferred for both tension and normal wood celluloses.

Stable conformations of 12-crown-O3N and its Li+ complex in aqueous solution

Stable conformations of 12-crown-O3N and its Li complexes in aqueous solution were investigated. To calculate the free energy differences of conformers of 12-crown-O3N and its Li+ complex, our procedure was to make use of two programs, CONFLEX and BOSS. The former generates conformers, and the latter calculates the differences in free energy of solvation between two conformers in aqueous solution. It was confirmed that the present procedure is applicable in solving the question of what is the most stable conformation of 12-crown-O3N in aqueous solution. Results of the calculations suggest that the order of stability for conformers in a vacuum is different from that in aqueous solution. It was also confirmed that the coordination geometry of solvent waters to Li+ changes depending on the distance between the cation and the crown ring.
