Matrix isolation study of S2O6F2 pyrolysis products: The infrared spectrum of SO3F radical

Infrared and visible absorption spectra of the low pressure heated products of S₂O₆F₂ trapped in inert gas matrices at 14 K are presented. The following have been identified as major infrared-absorbing species: SO₃F, SO₃, HSO₃F, and S₂O₆F₂, with matrix spectra of the latter three unequivocally confirming their presence. Reasonable reactions accounting for the production of these species are proposed, and a reassignment of the fundamental vibrations of monomeric HSO₃F is offered. The infrared absorptions of the SO₈F radical have been observed for the first time, and the six fundamental vibrations determined. These frequencies are in good accord with earlier values deduced indirectly by King and Warren from hot band transitions in the visible absorption spectrum of the vapor. This same visible system (${}^2\text{E}\text{-}\text{X}\text{?}{}^2\text{A}{}_2$) has also been observed here for the matrix isolated species.

Relative efficiency calibration of Ge(Li) detector in low energy region

The relative gamma-ray intensities in the energy region between 122 and 411 keV in the decay of¹⁵²Eu were measured by using a Ge(Li) detector. Its efficiency calibration was carried out with the radioactive sources of²⁴¹Am,⁵⁷Co,²⁰³Hg,¹³⁷Cs,¹³³Ba,⁷⁵Se,¹⁶⁹Yb and¹⁹²Ir.     

Determination of nickel in standard rocks and glasses by photon activation analysis with 30-MeV bremsstrahlung

The determination of nickel in various silicate rocks and glasses by photon activation analysis with a linear electron accelerator is described. Simultaneous irradiation of the sample and comparative standards produces the ⁵⁸Ni(γ, n)⁵⁷Ni reaction, and a post-irradiation chemical separation is used in conjunction with Ge(Li) γ-spectrometry. Nickel abundances for ten standard silicate rocks and two elementally doped glasses are presented and compared with the data previously published. The method is quite simple and gives good reproducible results for nickel down to sub-p.p.m. levels.     

2-Bromo-2-cyano-N,N-dimethylacetamide as a new brominating agent

It has been found that 2-bromo-2-cyano-N,N-dimethylacetamide is effective for monobromination at α-carbon of ketones with high selectivity. Effects of solvent and of radical initiator and scavenger are suggestive of radical mechanism.
