Heat Kernel Asymptotics for the Measurable Riemannian Structure on the Sierpinski Gasket

For the measurable Riemannian structure on the Sierpinski gasket introduced by Kigami, various short time asymptotics of the associated heat kernel are established, including Varadhan’s asymptotic relation, some sharp one-dimensional asymptotics at vertices, and a non-integer-dimensional on-diagonal behavior at almost every point. Moreover, it is also proved that the asymptotic order of the eigenvalues of the corresponding Laplacian is given by the Hausdorff and box-counting dimensions of the space.     

Photoswitchable, DNA-Binding Helical Peptides Assembled with Two Independently Designed Sequences for Photoregulation and DNA Recognition

Diarylethene-bridged peptides were developed to photoregulate biomolecular interactions. The peptides are made up of diarylethene-bridged and DNA-binding regions at their N- and C?termini, respectively. The two regions could be independently designed and combined as desired. The α-helicities of the peptides were photoregulated in on/off or off/on manners, and the manner depended on the positions of two ornithine (Orn) residues for cross-linking reaction at the diarylethene-bridged region. In the case of the on/off manner, when the diarylethene structure adopted the open form on the peptides, the peptides folded into stable α-helices. Upon UV irradiation, the diarylethene moiety isomerized to its closed form to destabilize the helical structures. Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) analysis showed that the open isomer strongly associated with a target DNA, as compared with the closed one. When the closed-form peptide existing in the DNA complex was irradiated with a fluorescent lamp in the middle of the QCM monitoring, the frequency change (ΔF) was enhanced by the diarylethene photoisomerization.     

Evidence for nucleosynthesis in the supernova gamma process: universal scaling for p nuclei

Analyzing the solar system abundance, we find two universal scaling laws concerning the p and s nuclei. They indicate that the gamma process in supernova (SN) explosions is the most probable origin of the p nuclei that has been discussed with many possible nuclear reactions and sites in about 50 years. In addition, the scalings lead to new concepts: a universality of the gamma process and a new nuclear cosmochronometer. We carry out gamma-process nucleosynthesis calculations for typical core-collapse SN explosion models, and the results satisfy the observed scalings.     

Decay properties of the key resonant states in8Li(α, n)11B for primordial nucleosynthesis

The particle decay property of the key resonant states in the reaction⁸Li(,n)¹¹B for the inhomogeneous big bang models was studied experimentally. The sum of the branching ratios of the 10.572 MeV state for the neutron decays to the excited states in¹¹B is as large as for the ground state, indicating that the neutron decays to excited states are crucial and enhance the reaction rate for heavy element synthesis considerably.     

Synthesis and biological activities of new 1,4-benzothiazine derivatives.

New 2H-1,4-benzothiazin-3(4H)-one derivatives possessing (4-phenyl-1-piperazinyl)alkyl moieties at the 2-position were synthesized and tested for calcium antagonistic and calmodulin antagonistic activities. Antihypertensive effects in spontaneously hypertensive rats were also evaluated. In general, these compounds were rather weak calcium channel blockers, although, in contrast, many of them had moderate to potent calmodulin antagonistic activity, and 2-[3-(4-(4-fluorophenyl)-1-piperazinyl]propyl]-2H-1,4-benzothiazin -3 (4H)-one derivatives 45, 74 and 75 showed potent antihypertensive effects.
