Yellow‐light‐emitting cyano‐substituted poly[(1,3‐phenylene vinylene)‐alt‐(1,4‐phenylene vinylene)] derivative: Its synthesis and optical properties

A soluble cyano‐substituted poly[(1,3‐phenylene vinylene)‐alt‐(1,4‐phenylene vinylene)] derivative ( 9 ) was synthesized and characterized. Comparison between 9 and its model compound ( 10 ) showed that the chromophore in 9 remained to be well defined as a result of a π‐conjugation interruption at adjacent m‐phenylene units. The attachment of a cyano substituent only at the β position of the vinylene allowed the maximum electronic impact of the cyano group on the optical properties of the poly(p‐phenylene vinylene) material. At a low temperature (?108 or ?198 °C), the vibronic structures of 9 and 10 were partially resolved. The absorption and emission spectra of a film of 9 were less temperature‐dependent than those of a film of 10 , indicating that the former had a lower tendency to aggregate. A light‐emitting diode (LED) based on 9 emitted yellow light (λ_max ≈ 578 nm) with an external quantum efficiency of 0.03%. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New insights on amorphous silicon-nitride microcavities

All amorphous silicon-nitride planar optical microcavities operating in the visible range have been grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The luminescence intensity of the N-rich silicon-nitride layer from a microcavity with 6 period distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) is two order of magnitude higher than that of the luminescent layer without the cavity. Moreover, a strong directionality of the microcavities emission can be observed. Such results can be ascribed to the anisotropic optical density of states induced in the Fabry–Perot structure. The quality factors of the resonators are strictly correlated to the number of periods of the DBRs.     

Two-Variable Identities in Groups and Lie Algebras

We study two-variable Engel-like relations and identities characterizing finite-dimensional solvable Lie algebras and, conjecturally, finite solvable groups and introduce some invariants of finite groups associated with such relations. Bibliography: 29 titles.     

Effect of Conditions of Electric-Spark Dispersion of Zinc on the Quality of the Product Obtained

Influence exerted by additives introduced into the working solution, by iron or copper formedin electric-spark dispersion of these metals and zinc, on the quality of the products obtained in electric erosionwas studied.     

Banana-shaped mesogens: a new homologous series of compounds exhibiting the B7 mesophase

The synthesis and characterization of a new homologous series of compounds, the 2-cyano-1,3-phenylene bis[4-(4-n-alkoxyphenyliminomethyl)benzoates] derived from 2-cyanoresorcinol is reported. All the compounds are enantiotropic mesogens and exhibit the fascinating B₇ mesophase. The characterization of the mesophase was performed using polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and electro-optical studies.     

Probability Inequalities and Limit Theorems for Generalized L-Statistics

We obtain exponential upper bounds for tails of distributions of generalized L-statistics based on a sample from an exponential distribution. We prove the asymptotic normality of generalized L-statistics based on a sample from the uniform distribution on [0,1] and of L-statistics with decomposed kernels (without any restrictions on the sample distribution type).     

A variant of the pure quaternionic representation of the Navier-Stokes equation

It is shown that the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation for incompressible fluid can be represented as an equation including only quaternions as co-ordinate operators and variables. Only the quaternion operations such as a quaternion product and a quaternion conjugation over these variables are used.     

Magnetic-Zenith Effect

We develop a theory of the magnetic-zenith effect (MZE) observed upon the ionosphere modification by powerful radio waves. The dependences of MZE on main parameters, such as the magnetic-field inclination angle, pump-wave frequency and power, and angular width of HF beam are obtained. Nuclear superstructure {1/2, 0, 1/2} of an La<Subscript>0.93</Subscript>Sr<Subscript>0.07</Subscript>MnO<Subscript>3</Subscript> manganite orthorhombic crystal

The {1/2, 0, 1/2} nuclear superstructure in an La_0.93Sr_0.07MnO₃ manganite orthorhombic crystal is revealed using thermal-neutron diffraction. It is demonstrated that this superlattice belongs to the class of distortion-type structures and is directly associated with a 1/16-type ordering of Mn⁴⁺ and Mn³⁺ ions in a collinear ferromagnetic phase of the La_0.93Sr_0.07MnO₃ manganite.
