Reply to “nonequivalence of ether theories and special relativity. comment on recent interpretation of Lorentz' Ether theory”

The role played by coordinates in the formulation of an absolute spacetime theory is assessed. It is shown that recent criticism on previous work of ours is wrong.     

Corrigendum to “EuBaFe2O5+w: Valence mixing and charge ordering are two separate cooperative phenomena” [J. Solid State Chem. 180 (2007) 148-157]

An error in the expression for the Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺ valence-mixing probability in RBaFe₂O_5+w is acknowledged and correct formula is derived. The new formula slightly improves the least-squares fit to the experimental concentrations of the Mössbauer component Fe^2.5+ as a function of the oxygen-nonstoichiometry parameter w for R=Eu.     

129I in soil and grass samples around a nuclear reprocessing plant

Neutron activation analysis was used to determine¹²⁹I in soil and grass samples around a reprocessing plant. The method involved wet oxidation of samples, using chromic acid, followed by distillation, collection of iodine in alkaline solution, loading on Dowex-1, irradiation and post-irradiation purification steps. The -activity of¹³⁰I isotope of the purified samples was measured for quantitative determination of¹²⁹I. The experimental results showed that¹²⁹I and the¹²⁹I/¹²⁷I atomic ratio in soil samples varied from 1.09×10^–4 to 5.33×10^–3 pCi g^–1 and 0.10×10^–6 to 6.12×10^–6, respectively. Further, the geometric mean of soil-to-plant transfer factor (Bv) for¹²⁹I was found to be 0.16 which was comparable with other published values.     

Light-induced starch degradation in non-dormant turions of Spirodela polyrhiza

Continuous red light controls starch degradation in turions of Spirodela polyrhiza[Dölger, K., U. K. Tirlapur and K.‐J. Appenroth [1997]Photochem. Photobiol. 66, 126–127 (1997)]. This light could be replaced by repeated red light pulses with the reciprocity law fulfilled over a large range of fluence rates. The effect of red light pulses repeated every 24 or 12 h for 6 days was reversible by subsequent far‐red light pulses. In contrast, hourly applied red pulses were irreversible by far‐red light. This discrepancy was explained by showing the starch degradation activity of far‐red pulses themselves. The investigated process was categorized as a phytochrome low fluence response with an unusual property: requirement of light treatment for several days. A partial fulfillment of this requirement was obtained with a red pulse followed by a dark period and a 24 h continuous irradiation. These results suggest the existence of two separate steps in the process of starch degradation in turions: formation of a sprout (=sink) during the pulse‐induced germination, and starch degradation in the storage tissue (=source) induced by the second light treatment.     

Synthesis of 1,2-bis(methoxyamino)cycloalkanes from alicyclic 1,2-bis(hydroxyamines)

Derivatives of 1,4-dihydroxypiperazine-2,3-dione were obtained by reaction of cis-1,2-bis(hydroxyamino)cycloalkanes with diethyl oxalate. Their alkylation with CH₂N₂ or Mel afforded 1,4-dimethoxypiperazine-2,3-diones. Hydrolysis of the latter gave 1,2-bis(methoxyamino)cycloalkanes.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Stereoselective electrocatalytic cyclization of 3-substituted 2,2-dicyanocyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxylic acid esters to form 6-substituted (1R,5R,6R)*-4,4-dialkoxy-5-cyano-2-oxo-3-azabicyclo[3.1.0]hexane-1-carboxylic acid esters

Electrolysis of 3-substituted 2,2-dicyanocyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxylic acid esters in alcohols in an undivided cell in the presence of NaBr or NaOAc afforded 6-substituted (1R,5R, 6R)*-4,4-dialkoxy-5-cyano-2-oxo-3-azabicyclo[3.1.0]hexane-1-carboxylic acid esters in 80–95% yields.
