Linguistic knowledge and new technologies

Modern language studies are characterized by a variety of forms, ways, and methods of their development. In this connection, it is necessary to specify the problem of the development of their internal differentiation and classification, which lead to the formation of specific areas knowledge. An example of such an area is speechology—a field of science belonging to fundamental, theoretical, and applied linguistics.     

Violation of isotopic invariance in strong interactions and mass spectrum of the 1/2+ baryon octet

The ideas developed by Gell-Mann and Okubo in studying violation of unitary symmetry are used to describe violation of isototic invariance in strong interactions. The present consideration is performed for the example of the mass spectrum of the octet formed by baryons of spin-parity 1/2⁺: only for this family are the widths of its particles much less than the scale of the effects being investigated, their masses being known from experiments to a fairly high precision. The Gell-Mann-Okubo formula is generalized in such a way that relations both for the splitting between the isomultiplets of the octet and for the mass splitting within these isomultiplets follow from the new formula. Moreover, a relation between masses that describes their electromagnetic splitting and which coincides in form with the Coleman-Glashow relation also follows from this formula. The relations obtained for the masses of the baryons belonging to the octet in question are satisfied to a precision not poorer than 3%.     

The radiative return at small angles: virtual corrections

Virtual corrections for electron-positron annihilation into one real and one off-shell photon of invariant mass are evaluated. Special attention is paid to those configurations where the real photon is collinear with the beam direction. This calculation is an important ingredient of a Monte Carlo program, which simulates events with tagged photons from initial-state radiation, including NLO corrections. Multi-layer structure in the strongly coupled 5D abelian Higgs model

We explore the phase diagram of the five-dimensional anisotropic Abelian Higgs model by Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we study the transition between the confining phase and the four-dimensional layered Higgs phase. We find that, in a certain region of the lattice parameter space, this transition can be first order, and that each layer moves into the Higgs phase independently of the others (decoupling of layers). As the Higgs couplings vary, we find, using mean field techniques, that this transition may probably become second order. Received: 21 December 2001 / Published online: 12 April 2002     

Raman spectra of MgB2 at high pressure and topological electronic transition

Raman spectra of MgB₂ ceramic samples were measured as a function of pressure up to 32 GPa at room temperature. The spectrum at normal conditions contains a very broad peak at ∼590 cm⁻¹ related to the E _2g phonon mode. The frequency of this mode exhibits a strong linear dependence in the pressure region from 5 to 18 GPa, whereas, beyond this region, the slope of the pressure-induced frequency shift is reduced by about a factor of two. The pressure dependence of the phonon mode up to ∼5 GPa exhibits a change in the slope, as well as a “hysteresis” effect in the frequency vs. pressure behavior. These singularities in the E _2g mode behavior under pressure support the suggestion that MgB₂ may undergo a pressure-induced topological electronic transition.     

Full-Wave Analyses for a Multi-Layered Microstrip Patch Antenna

This paper describes numerical modelling of a dual band multi-layered microstrip patch antenna operating at 35GHz on an in-house semi-insulating GaAs substrate. The simulated and measured resonant frequencies at both lower and upper resonant frequencies will be compared to check the accuracy of the different numerical modelling techniques.     

Synthesis and Properties of Carbocyclic Schiff Bases

New Schiff bases containing both adamantyl and phenyl fragments in a single molecule were synthesized by condensation of appropriate diamines with aromatic aldehydes. The condensation products were brought into reduction and nucleophilic addition reactions.     

Spline Techniques for Solving Singularly-Perturbed Nonlinear Problems on Nonuniform Grids

A numerical method based on cubic splines with nonuniform grid is given for singularly-perturbed nonlinear two-point boundary-value problems. The original nonlinear equation is linearized using quasilinearization. Difference schemes are derived for the linear case using a variable-mesh cubic spline and are used to solve each linear equation obtained via quasilinearization. Second-order uniform convergence is achieved. Numerical examples are given in support of the theoretical results.
