Fast Soliton Scattering by Delta Impurities

We study the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a repulsive delta function potential. We show that a high velocity incoming soliton is split into a transmitted component and a reflected component. The transmitted mass (L ² norm squared) is shown to be in good agreement with the quantum transmission rate of the delta function potential. We further show that the transmitted and reflected components resolve into solitons plus dispersive radiation, and quantify the mass and phase of these solitons.     

Ambient mass spectrometry using desorption electrospray ionization (DESI): instrumentation, mechanisms and applications in forensics, chemistry, and biology

Analytical characteristics of DESI are summarized. Examples of applications to small and large molecules, to in situ analysis, and to high-throughput analyses are presented. Evidence is provided for both a heterogeneous charge-transfer mechanism and a droplet pick-up mechanism of ionization. The speed, lack of the need for sample preparation, selectivity, and sensitivity of DESI are all demonstrated and discussed. Instrumentation is also discussed. Forensic applications as well as emerging areas of application including tissue imaging are given emphasis.     

Doubly-dendronized linear polymers

Doubly-dendronized polymers were synthesized by grafting polybenzyl ether dendrons onto a poly(hydroxy) styrene polymer with polyaliphatic esters.     

Organic dyes incorporating low-band-gap chromophores for dye-sensitized solar cells

Versatile dyes based on benzothiadiazole and benzoselenadiazole chromophores have been developed that perform efficiently in dye-sensitized solar cells. Power conversion efficiency of 3.77% is realized for a dye in which charge recombination is probably hindered by the nonplanar charge-separated structure.     

Short and efficient synthesis of a vinyl-substituted tricyclic erythromycin derivative

Tricyclic erythromycin A derivatives are known potent antibacterial agents, but the potential of substituted tricyclic erythromycin A derivatives remains largely unexplored. To study this lead, the tricyclic ring system was synthesized by an efficient three-step synthesis starting from the allylic alcohol utilizing a novel azidoisocyanate. These tricyclic analogues can be used as scaffolds to probe secondary ribosomal binding sites. [structure: see text]     

Scaling laws and surface exponents from renormalization group equations

The critical behaviour of a semi-infinite system with O(n) spin symmetry is studied. Renormalization group equations are derived whose solutions yield scaling laws for surface exponents. Results to order ² are given which disprove the conjecture η_; = ν⁻¹ by Bray and Moore.
