Simple and rapid determination of trace amounts of gold(III), palladium(II), and platinum(IV) in industrial waste solutions after recovery of noble metals by combined use of GFAAS and anion-exchange separation.

A simple and rapid method for the analysis of trace amounts of gold(III), palladium(II), and platinum(IV) by the combined use of graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry and anion-exchange separation was proposed, and successfully applied to the rapid determination of metals in industrial waste solutions obtained from the final process of noble-metal recovery factories, because noble metals can be selectively and quantitatively separated to a high degree by using a small column containing only a 0.7 g-portion of a common anion-exchange resin and a dilute thiourea solution.     

Polymorphy in the stereostructure of periodic polymer backbones

We theoretically investigated the polymorphy of the stereostructures of a periodic polymer. Using the polymer's internal conformation parameters of bond lengths, bond angles, and internal rotation angles, we extended the mathematical treatment for designing polymer backbones. We considered those periodic polymers whose unit cell consists of one (m = 1), two (m = 2), or three (m = 3) kinds of atoms. Moreover, for these three types of polymers, we supposed two catenation types for the skeleton atoms; one is a “homorotatory” sequence and the other is a “heterorotatory” one. To specify the backbone's stereostructure, we introduced several conformation parameters such as the helical pitch number n, the translation distance d, and the inclination angle of the skeleton plane Θ. By combining these parameters, we can systematically understand the variety and the possible polymorphy in the stereostructure of a periodic polymer backbone. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Preparation of chiral stationary phase via activated carbamate intermediate for liquid chromatographic optical resolution

Summary Chiral stationary phases (CSPs) for liquid chromatography were prepared by the way of an activated carbamate intermediate. The amino group of aminopropylsilyl silica gel was first activated by carbamylation with disuccinimido carbonate (DSC). The obtained activated carbamate silica gel (ACsil) proved useful as an intermediate for the preparation of urea-type CSPs. The reaction of ACsil with (S)- of (R)-1-(α-naphthyl)-ethylamine gave naphthylethylurea type CSPs. These CSPs were also obtained directly from aminopropylsilyl silica gel by its reaction with optically active (S)- or (R)-succinimido 1-(α-naphthyl)ethyl carbamate (SINEC). Several phenylthiohydantoin amino acid enantiomers and p-bromophenylcarbamyl amino acid enantiomers were resolved on the CSPs by elution with aqueous mobile phase.     

Efficient [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement accelerated by a trifluoroacetyl group: synthesis of benzofurans under mild conditions

The [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement took place smoothly during the course of trifluoroacetylation of O-phenyloxime at below room temperature to give the dihydrobenzofuran or benzofuran as a result of concomitant cyclization.     

The nephritogenic glycopeptide from rat glomerular basement membrane. X. Synthesis of an N-triglycosyl dipeptide and characteristics of its cis-trans isomers.

Isomers of O-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl-(1----6)-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl- (1----6)-N-[L-aspart-1-oyl-(L-proline)-4-oyl]-alpha-D-glucopyranos ylamine have been prepared, as models for a derivative possibly present in the glomerular basement membrane of rats, by condensation of the corresponding dipeptide derivative (5) with triglycosylamine (4) in the presence of O,O-diethylcyanophosphonate, followed by deprotection of the trisaccharide-dipeptide derivative. During the deprotection process, cis- and trans-isomers containing proline were separated by silica gel column chromatography and also reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography.     

Rapid determination of sulphonamides in milk using liquid chromatographic separation and fluorescamine derivatization.

A simple and selective method is presented for the multiple residue determination of eight sulphonamides in consumers' milk. The drugs are sulphisomidine (ID), sulphadiazine (DZ), sulphamerazine, sulphadimidine, sulphamonomethoxine, sulphamethoxazole, sulphadimethoxine and sulphaquinoxaline (SQ). The milk sample was deproteinized with the same volume of 2 M hydrochloric acid and filtered. A 1-ml volume of the filtrate was mixed with 1 ml each of 1.25 M sodium acetate solution and a buffer (pH 3.0) for derivatization with 0.6 ml of 0.02% fluorescamine solution in acetone. A high-performance liquid chromatographic analysis was carried out on a C18 column with a mobile phase of acetonitrile-2% acetic acid (3:5) at 55 degrees C using a fluorescence detector at an excitation wavelength of 405 nm and an emission wavelength of 495 nm. Average recoveries at fortification levels of 2, 5 and 10 ng/ml were 114%, 109% and 106%, respectively. Relative standard deviations were 1-4% at 10 ng/ml for ID, 5 ng/ml for DZ and SQ and 2.5 ng/ml for the other five sulphonamides. The method was applied to 25 milk samples and all appeared to be free from the drugs.     

Application of water as a solvent in microwave-assisted extraction for analysis of PCBs and CBzs in fly ash

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and chlorobenzenes (CBzs) are two classes of dioxin precursors formed in municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs); they produce negative health effects similar to those of dioxins. Reducing the analytical time required for determining the concentrations of these compounds in MSWIs is important for quickly evaluating their importance and assessing associated health risks. In the present study, water is used as a safe and environmentally friendly solvent in microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) for PCB and CBz analyses. MAE is compared with traditional Soxhlet extraction (SE) to determine the extraction efficiencies. The evaluation of extraction efficiencies shows that MAE has a high extraction efficiency compared with that of SE when water content is lower than 60%. Furthermore, the extraction time and organic solvent consumption are reduced with MAE compared with SE.     

A new strategy for construction of eight-membered carbocycles by Brook rearrangement mediated [6 + 2] annulation

[reaction: see text] A newly developed strategy for construction of eight-membered carbocycles via [6 + 2] annulation that involves the combination of beta-alkenoyl acylsilanes and a vinyllithium derivative is described. A unique feature of this annulative approach is that it enables in one operation and a stereoselective manner construction of eight-membered ring systems containing useful functionalities for further synthetic elaboration from readily available six- and two-carbon components.     

Thermodynamic study of complex formation of benzo-18-crown-6 with K+, Tl+, and Pb2+ in water

H ⁰ and S ⁰ values of the complex formation in water of benzo-18-crown-6 (B18C6) with K⁺, Tl⁺, and Pb²⁺ were determined and compared with those of 18-crown-6. The H⁰ values of B18C6 are negative. The stability in water of the B18C6-metal ion complex at 25°C is governed largely by the magnitude of the H ⁰ value. The B18C6-metal ion complex is less stable in water than the corresponding 18C6-metal ion complex. This is due largely to a less favorable enthalpic contribution of the B18C6-metal ion complex compared with the corresponding 18C6-metal ion complex. The two aromatic ether oxygen atoms of B18C6 are responsible for the larger H ⁰ value of the B18C6-metal ion complex compared with the corresponding 18C6-metal ion complex.
