A general and enantiodivergent method for the asymmetric synthesis of piperidine alkaloids: concise synthesis of (R)-pipecoline, (S)-coniine and other 2-alkylpiperidines

A simple and very efficient protocol for the preparation of highly enantioenriched 2-alkylpiperidines has been set up, which allows the preparation of the final heterocycles with any wanted configuration at the stereogenic center starting from the same starting material. The key step of the synthesis relies on a diastereodivergent aza-Michael reaction protocol using the readily available and cheap reagent (+)-(S,S)-pseudoephedrine as chiral auxiliary.     

The thermodynamic model of inorganic arsenic species in aqueous solutions Potentiometric study of the hydrolitic equilibrium of arsenic acid

Protonation constants of arsenic acid were determined at different ionic strengths in NaClO(4) (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 3.0 mol dm(-3)), NaCl (0.5 and 1.0 mol dm(-3)) and KCl (0.5, 1.0 and 3.0 mol dm(-3)) ionic media by means of a potentiometric study. The distribution of arsenate species was defined depending on two important variables in natural environments: pH and composition. All the experimentation was performed at 25 degrees C. The differences found in the protonation constants for different medium compositions, were explained by the different behaviour of the interaction parameters of the species considered in the different media and ionic strengths. These parameters were reported for all hydrolitic As(V) species and were calculated using the Modified Bromley's Methodology (MBM). The corresponding thermodynamic stepwise formation constants were also determined (log degrees K(1)=11.58+/-0.01, log degrees K(2)=7.06+/-0.01, log degrees K(3)=2.25+/-0.01). All the results obtained showed not only the importance of the ionic strength but also of the composition of the ionic medium on the distribution of the acid-base species of As(V) as a function of pH in natural waters.     

Ag(I) complexes with alkylidene-bis(2-aminopyrimidines) as building units for discrete metallomacrocyclic frames. A structural and solution study

Alkylidene-bis(2-aminopyrimidines) (pyr2Cx, x = 2-5) are useful ligands to interact with Ag(I) yielding discrete metallocycles. Crystal structures of the [(pyr2C2)Ag(NO3)]2 and [(H-pyr2C4)Ag(NO3)2]2 have been isolated where each macrocyclic moiety interacts with their surroundings through weak interactions, yielding 3D discrete structures, On the other hand, the solution study shows that the equilibrium constants for the formation of Ag(pyr2Cx)+ complexes are higher than the literature values for Ag(I) complexes with single pyrimidines, although the differences could be explained by invoking the solid-state structures of the Ag(I)-pyr2Cx complexes.

Synthesis and degradation of intelligent hydrogels containing polyacetal segments

Intelligent hydrogels were first obtained by copolymerization of telechelic poly(1,3-dioxolane) (pDXL) with acrylic acid, acrylamide, N-isopropylacrylamide respectively. The synthesis and characterization of the networks were discussed. The swelling behavior of the hydrogel was dependent on the solubility parameter of the solvents and hydrogels. The networks containing polyacetal segments (pDXL) can degrade by acid in different solvents. DXL and few other cycle molecules measured by GC-MS analysis were formed after degradation. According to the degradation products, the polymerization mechanism can be testified.

The increase in the size and complexity of chemical databases necessitates the proposal and development of efficient methods of classification and recovery of information, which supposes proposal of a model of classification of database records and the use of a compatible model of screening for inspection of clusters and recovery of the molecules that satisfy the search criterion. The cycle graphs model based on consideration of all the cycles and chains (and equivalent cycles and chains) present in the molecular structure has been proven appropriate for classification of chemical databases, giving rise to a generation of different classification levels depending on the structural elements (cycles and chains) that are considered. In this paper we propose a screening model, compatible with the cycle graphs model, based on a hierarchy of levels of abstraction. The set of molecules that satisfies a screening model (or selection criterion) diminishes as we advance in the hierarchy of levels of the model, which allows filtering of records and, therefore, an increase in the efficiency of the screening process. In the following work of this series we describe and validate the screening tool developed.     

Development and validation of an analytical methodology for the determination of p,p′-DDT, p,p′-DDE and p,p′-DDD in fish oil pills

An analytical methodology was proposed and validated to be applied to the determination of p,p′-DDT and its metabolites p,p′-DDE and p,p′-DDD in fish oil. The analytical procedure presented in this paper involves a single-step clean up process prior to the analysis. A solution of 1,2,3,4-tetrachloronaphtalene was used as internal standard.The analytical technique used was gas chromatography coupled to an electron capture detector. Details on the validation process are provided.The limits of detection ranged from 2.6 to 4.7 pg μL^− 1. The BCR 598 standard reference material (cod liver oil) was used to evaluate the performance of the methodology with satisfactory recoveries for all the compounds.The analytes were determined in three different fish oil pills sold in Spain as a supplementary vitamin support. The sum of p,p′-DDT and metabolites was from 13.2 to 51.3 ng g^− 1, the dominant compound being p,p′-DDE.     

Stabilization of cobalt(II) chloro-complexes with the butanediammonium cation

Summary Cobalt(II) chlorocomplexes with empirical formulae (bnH₂)₂CoCl₆·2H₂O (1) and (bnH₂)₂CoCl₆ (2), where bnH ₂ ²⁺ represents the diprotonated species of putrescine (1,4-butanediamine), were prepared.The visible spectra in the solid state and measurement of the magnetic moments permit the assignation of an octahedral geometry for cobalt in (1) and a tetrahedral geometry for (2).     

Effect of growth conditions on the rheological properties and chemical composition ofVolcaniella eurihalina exopolysaccharide

The exopolysaccharide produced byVolcaniella eurihalina, an halophilic eubacterium, under different environmental and nutritional conditions, is studied.V. eurihalina synthesizes an acidic heteropolysaccharide, composed by rhamnose, glucose, and mannose, as well as amino sugars, uronic acids, and acetyl and sulphate residues. This composition varies depending on the nutrients of culture medium. Viscosity and pseudoplasticity of the polymer solutions are also influenced by the nutritional conditions in which the microorganism was grown.
