High-resolution spectrum of xenon ions at 13.4 nm

The spectrum of xenon excited in a low-inductance vacuum spark was photographed at high resolution in the region of 9.5-15.5 nm. The observed transitions were identified as belonging to ions from Xe8+ to Xe13+. In the region of importance for extreme-ultraviolet lithography around 13.4 nm, the strongest lines were identified as 4d8-4d7 5p transitions in Xe10+. The identifications were made by use of energy parameters extrapolated along the isoelectronic sequence.     

Single-photon all-optical switching using coupled microring resonators

We study the nonlinear phase response of a microring resonator coupled to a bus waveguide and the use of this nonlinear phase shift to store information in the microring resonator and enhance the switching characteristics of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). By introducing coupling between adjacent microring resonators, the switching characteristics of the MZI can be exponentially enhanced as a function of the number of microring resonators, when compared to the linear enhancement for uncoupled resonators. With only a few moderate-finesse microring resonators, the switching power can be reduced to attowatt level, allowing for photonic switching devices that operate at single-photon level in ordinary optical waveguides.      

Prediction of Γ-L and L-X crossovers in Ga<Subscript>x</Subscript>Al<Subscript>1-x</Subscript>Sb alloys by empirical pseudopotential method

Using empirical pseudopotential method Γ-L crossover is found for the Ga_0.74Al_0.26Sb. The conduction band minimum is observed to switch at the (0.87, 0, 0) point for Ga_0.51Al_0.49Sb which shifts to the X point for Ga_0.21Al_0.79Sb and remains at X leading finally to indirect band gap in AlSb. Band structure calculations for a large number of alloys are performed and bowing parameters b_X and b_L are proposed for the E_X and E_L respectively. Our findings may serve as directive to select the materials in a range of composition to examine the bowing parameters and thereby effective mass experimentally for the Ga_xAl_1-xSb alloys.     

Low silicon non-grain-oriented electrical steel: Linking magnetic properties with metallurgical factors

Commercial supply, from several steel manufacturers, of low-silicon non-grain-oriented electrical steel was monitored over a span of several years. A total of 51 samples were selected—selected from many hundreds on the basis of large differences in magnetic properties, but absence of significant variations in chemistry (other than differences in silicon percentage). The selected samples were analyzed for crystallographic texture and for grain size.     

Biomolecules-carbon nanotubes doped conducting polymer nanocomposites and their sensor application

A simple method for preparing bio-functionalized soluble single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is described. Different proteins such as bovine serum albumin (BSA), cytochrome c and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were used to solubilize low functionality SWNTs in water aided by sonication. The unbound proteins were removed by column chromatography and the SWNT-protein conjugate was used as the sole anionic dopant in electropolymerization of polypyrrole from polymerization solution at pH above the isoelectric point of the protein to provide a negative charge. The morphology of the polypyrrole with SWNT-protein dopant was found to be three-dimensional and fibrous with wide open interlocking pores in contrast to smooth and cauliflower-like for chloride doped polypyrrole. Enhanced sensor performance was demonstrated for hydrogen peroxide detection on polypyrrole/SWCNT-HRP nanocomposites modified electrode. Such nanocomposites can be potentially applied for other biosensor and bio-fuel cell applications.     

Reflection of normal acoustic waves in thin plates from a grating with a periodically distributed mechanical load

Reflection of zero-order normal acoustic waves excited in a thin piezoelectric plate from a set of conducting strips of a finite thickness is studied both theoretically and experimentally. The analysis shows that the effects produced by the short-circuiting of the plate surface and by the elastic load on the impedance ratio of adjacent plate segments are in opposition to each other. These effects can be commensurable, and, hence, for each wave type, there is a certain value of the strip thickness at which the reflection coefficient becomes equal to zero. The experimental results obtained for a shear horizontal normal wave (an SH ₀ wave) propagating in a lithium niobate plate are in good agreement with the theory and justify the use of the equivalent-circuit model in analyzing the properties of reflectors of the type under study.
