On the origin of optical activity in tris-diamine complexes of Co(III) and Rh(III): a simple model based on time-dependent density function theory

Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) is applied to the CD spectra of Lambda(deltadeltadelta)-(+)-[Co(S-pn)n(en)(3-n)]3+ (n = 1, 2, 3) and Lambda(deltadeltadelta)-(+)-[Co(en)3]3+ as well as the stereoisomers Delta-((delta)n(lambda)(3-n))-(-)-[Co(S-pn)n(en)(3-n)]3+ (n = 1, 2, 3) and Delta(deltadeltadelta)-(-)-[Co(en)3]3+. Theory is able to reproduce the major differences in the CD spectra of the species with a Lambda-configuration and their isomers with a Delta-configuration in both the d-d and ligand-to-metal CT region. It is further possible to rationalize the trend in terms of a larger azimuthal distortion away from the octahedral geometry in the Lambda-conformation compared to the Delta-configuration. Considerations were also given to the CD spectra of the lel3-isomer, Delta(lambdalambdalambda)-(-)-[Rh(R-pn)3]3+ and the ob-isomer, Lambda(lambdalambdalambda)-(+)-[Rh(S-pn)3]3+.     

Encapsulated guest molecules in the dimer of octahydroxypyridine[4]arene

Recently a new type of calix[4]arenes has been synthesized via condensation of 2,6-dihydroxypyridine and a number of aldehydes. This type of pyridine[4]arenes forms capsules consisting of two single pyridine[4]arenes. These capsules can incorporate different guest molecules, like carboxylic acids and amides in this case. We proved that the guest acids really are incorporated inside the cavity of the capsules by electrospray mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations.     

Photoinduced Electron Transfer Reactions of alpha-Cyclopropyl- and alpha-Epoxy Ketones. Tandem Fragmentation-Cyclization to Bi-, Tri-, and Spirocyclic Ketones

Reductive photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reactions have been performed with various bicyclic alpha-cyclopropyl-substituted ketones and tertiary amines. The reaction resulted in a regioselective cleavage of one cyclopropyl bond under formation of an exocyclic radical with an endocyclic enolate unit. In the case of bicyclic ketones with an unsaturated side chain, various bicyclic, spirocyclic, and tricyclic products are accessible via radical cyclization, depending on the position of the alkenyl substituent. In addition to triethylamine, N-silylated amines have also been used as electron donors, leading to a variety of compounds, among them are silylated fragmentation products, indicating that a proton is transferred from not only the amine radical cation but also the cationic silyl group. The intramolecular Paternó-Büchi reaction has also been studied for cyclopropane derivatives of the jasmone type leading to tetracyclic oxetanes. Finally, alpha-epoxy-substituted ketones have been investigated under PET conditions, yielding ring-opened products.     

Mass spectrometric analysis of ceramic components for solid oxide fuel cells

For the determination of trace impurities in ceramic components of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), some mass spectrometric methods have been applied such as spark source mass spectrometry (SSMS), laser ionization mass spectrometry (LIMS), laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Due to a lack of suitable standard reference materials for quantifying of analytical results on La _x Sr _y MnO₃ cathode material a matrix-matched synthetic standard-high purity initial compounds doped with trace elements-was prepared in order to determine the relative sensitivity coefficients in SSMS and LA-ICP-MS. Radiofrequency glow discharge mass spectrometry (rf-GDMS) was developed for trace analysis and depth profiling of thick non-conducting layers. Surface analytical techniques, such as secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and sputtered neutral mass spectrometry (SNMS), were used to determine the element distribution on surfaces (homogeneity) and the surface contaminants of SOFC ceramic layers.Dedicated to Professor Dr. rer. nat. Antimalarial activity of n(6)-substituted adenosine derivatives (part 2)

We have investigated the in vitro antimalarial activity of a new series of adenosine derivatives. The results show that N(6)-(1-naphthylmethyl)-5'-deoxy-5'-(amido)adenosines as well as N(6)-(4-phenylbenzyl)-5'-deoxy-5'-(amido)adenosines display significant activity against the malaria-causing parasites, with the sterically demanding bisubstituted species reported being active in most cases in the low-micromolar range. The novel compounds with unusual substitution pattern were obtained applying an efficient convergent polymer-assisted solution-phase (cPASP) synthesis protocol. Thus, we were able to prepare a series of substituted derivatives in parallel that would have been difficult to synthesize by standard techniques. The scope and limitations of the synthetic methodology are discussed.     

Chemistry of polyfunctional molecules-123. Reactions of BiBr3, SbI3 and AsI3 with LiN(PPh2)2; X-ray structure of a cyclophosphazene salt containing arsenic(I)

BiBr₃ or SbI₃ react at 20°C with LiN(PPh₂)₂ (1) to give elementary Bi or Sb and the P---P coupled phosphazene ligand Ph₂P---N=PPh₂---PPh₂=N---PPh₂ (2). The reaction of AsI₃ with 1 at room temperature formed yellow needles of the eight-membered heterocycle (3), whereas AsI₃ interacted at 80°C with 1 in the molar ratio of 1:3 to give elementary arsenic and 2. Treatment of AsI₃ and 1 at 20°C in a 1:2 stoichiometry yielded the seven-membered, cyclic arsenium(I) salt

Interplay between Auger and ionization processes in nanocrystal quantum dots

We study the interplay between Auger effects and ionization processes in the limit of strong electronic confinement in core/shell CdSe/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots. Spectrally resolved fluorescence decay measurements reveal a monotonic increase of the photoluminescence decay rate on excitation density. Our results suggest that Auger recombination accelerates ionization processes that lead to the occupation of dark, nonemissive nanocrystal states. A model is proposed in the quantized Auger regime describing these experimental observations and providing an estimate of the Auger assisted ionization rates.     

Graph products of groups and group spaces

An application of constructions from so-called Bass-Serre theory to group spaces in noncommutative geometry is discussed motivated by the question how to make visible the interplay of different structures coming together in the notion of a group space. A compact summary of basic notions and constructions from Bass-Serre theory up to the structure theorem is developed; it should serve as a brief guideline for further applications. Concluding prospects indicate a way for generalizing the methods from a categorical point of view.Dedicated to Professor Johannes André on the occasion of his 70th birthday     

A new inorganic-organic polymer for the passivation of thin film capacitors

Inorganic-organic polymers with barrier properties against water vapor, excellent electrical data (3, 2, R _D>10¹⁶ cm, E _D up to 400 V/µm) and good adhesion to various substrate materials have been developed. Tailored modifications of these materials provide an excellent protective coating for thin film capacitors. Several mm thick, expensive, encapsulations could be replaced by thin coatings (up to 10 µm). The polymer coating allows the use of thin film chip capacitors in surface-mount technology. As a measure for the efficiency of the coating, the capacitance decrease under controlled humidity has been used. The influence of the material composition, the type of catalyst during sol-gel processing and the curing conditions have been studied. Adhesion and water vapor permeation properties of the polymers and rheological properties of the coating solutions have been investigated. A protective coating is developed, which increases the withstandness of capacitors against humid conditions (90°C, 100% rel. humidity) by a factor of about 30 (compared to uncoated capacitors) and shows no crack formation during thermal cycling.
