Ultraviolet B light stimulates interleukin-20 expression by human epithelial keratinocytes

The proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-20 (IL-20) may exert the majority of its activity in the skin. We examined the effect of various treatments including several forms of phototherapy on IL-20 expression using cultured normal human epithelial keratinocytes (NHEK). Broadband UVB light, recombinant (r) IL-1 and rIL-8 increased, while hydrocortisone reduced, NHEK supernatant IL-20 levels. Elevation of NHEK IL-20 mRNA and maximal supernatant IL-20 levels occurred with a UVB light dose (40 mJ cm(-2)) that reduced cell viability by approximately 50%. While this UVB light dose also elevated supernatant IL-1 alpha and IL-8 levels, antibody neutralization studies indicated that neither of these cytokines was directly responsible for this increase in IL-20 expression. However, the elevation in IL-20 levels was fully inhibited by the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor SB-203580, suggesting involvement of this stress signaling pathway in this UVB light response. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with the photosensitizer lemuteporfin, UVA light, cisplatin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) or recombinant interferon-gamma (rIFN-gamma) either had little effect or decreased NHEK supernatant IL-20 levels. Reduced IL-20 levels paralleled the cytotoxic actions of PDT, UVA light or cisplatin and the antiproliferative effect of rIFN-gamma. Neither rIL-20 supplementation nor anti-IL-20 antibody treatments affected cell viability indicating that soluble IL-20 did not affect the short-term survival of UVB light-irradiated NHEK. Stimulation of IL-20 expression in keratinocytes by UVB light suggests that this cytokine might participate in skin responses to this ever-present environmental factor and potentially has a role in UV light-associated dermatoses.     

Mapping of the habenulo-interpeduncular pathway in living mice using manganese-enhanced 3D MRI

This magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study describes mapping of the habenulo-interpeduncular pathway in living mice based on manganese-induced contrast. Six hours after intracerebroventricular microinjection of MnCl2, T1-weighted 3D MRI (2.35 T) at 117 mum isotropic resolution revealed a continuous pattern of anterograde labeling from the habenula via the fasciculus retroflexus to the interpeduncular nucleus. Alternatively, the less invasive systemic administration of MnCl2 allowed for monitoring of the dynamic uptake pattern of respective neural components with even higher reproducibility across animals. Time courses covered the range from 42 min to 24 h after injection. In conclusion, manganese-enhanced MRI may open new ways for functional assessments of the habenulo-interpeduncular system in animal models with cognitive impairment.     

Theoretical analysis of the experimental UV-Vis absorption spectra of some phenolic Schiff bases

The time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) was applied in conjunction with the natural bond orbital analysis to examine the UV-Vis properties of 10 phenolic Schiff bases. The calculations were performed with different functionals, but main discussion refers to results obtained at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level of theory. The approach based on the natural localised molecular orbital clusters indicates similar behaviour for majority of examined compounds. The HOMO (“highest occupied molecular orbital”) cluster is delocalised over the ring which is electron richer, the HOMO-1 cluster is spread over the other ring, whereas the LUMO (“lowest unoccupied molecular orbital”) cluster is situated on the imino group. The two bands at long wavelengths correspond to the HOMO → LUMO and HOMO-1 → LUMO transitions, i.e. from both A and B rings to the imino group. The next band originates from a transition from the imino group to the imino group. The band at the smallest wavelengths originates from a transition from the A ring to the A ring, or from the B ring to the B ring. Our findings are in very good agreement with the existing literature data.     

Integer and fractional quantum Hall effect in a strip of stripes

We study anisotropic stripe models of interacting electrons in the presence of magnetic fields in the quantum Hall regime with integer and fractional filling factors. The model consists of an infinite strip of finite width that contains periodically arranged stripes (forming supercells) to which the electrons are confined and between which they can hop with associated magnetic phases. The interacting electron system within the one-dimensional stripes are described by Luttinger liquids and shown to give rise to charge and spin density waves that lead to periodic structures within the stripe with a reciprocal wavevector 8k _F in a mean field approximation. This wavevector gives rise to Umklapp scattering and resonant scattering that results in gaps and chiral edge states at all known integer and fractional filling factors ν. The integer and odd denominator filling factors arise for a uniform distribution of stripes, whereas the even denominator filling factors arise for a non-uniform stripe distribution. We focus on the ground state of the system, and identify the quantum Hall regime via the quantized Hall conductance. For this we calculate the Hall conductance via the Streda formula and show that it is given by σ _H = νe ²/h for all filling factors. In addition, we show that the composite fermion picture follows directly from the condition of the resonant Umklapp scattering.     

Electron-impact-induced asparagine molecule fragmentation

The fragmentation of the hydrated and anhydrous asparagine molecule (C₄H₈N₂O₃) under a low-energy electron impact was studied both experimentally and theoretically. The main emphasis was given to the mechanisms of the fragment production of these molecules. A special attention was paid to the energy characteristics of the ionic fragment yield. The geometrical parameters of the initial molecule rearrangement were also analyzed.     

Multiband processing of multimode light: combining 3D photonic lanterns with waveguide Bragg gratings

The first demonstration of narrowband spectral filtering of multimode light on a 3D integrated photonic chip using photonic lanterns and waveguide Bragg gratings is reported. The photonic lanterns with multi‐notch waveguide Bragg gratings were fabricated using the femtosecond direct‐write technique in boro‐aluminosilicate glass (Corning, Eagle 2000). Transmission dips of up to 5 dB were measured in both photonic lanterns and reference single‐mode waveguides with 10.4‐mm‐long gratings. The result demonstrates efficient and symmetrical performance of each of the gratings in the photonic lantern. Such devices will be beneficial to space‐division multiplexed communication systems as well as for units for astronomical instrumentation for suppression of the atmospheric telluric emission from OH lines.     

Comment on: “Questions concerning the generalized Hartman effect” [Phys. Lett. A 375 (2011) 3259]

In this comment, we show that the arguments against the applicability of stationary phase method (SPM) for tunneling time calculations, presented in Letter “Questions concerning the generalized Hartman effect” are not valid for small wave packet energy widths.     

A NOTE ON THE DRAZIN INVERSE OF A MODIFIED MATRIX

In this article,the expression for the Drazin inverse of a modified matrix is considered and some interesting results are established.This contributes to certain recent results obtained by Y.Wei [9].     

Reversible gas-phase redox processes catalyzed by Co-exchanged MFU-4l(arge)

Postsynthetic metal ion exchange in a benzotriazolate-based MFU-4l(arge) framework leads to a Co(II)-containing framework with open metal sites showing reversible gas-phase oxidation properties.     

On the convergence of finite difference schemes for the heat equation with concentrated capacity

Summary. We investigate the convergence of difference schemes for the one-dimensional heat equation when the coefficient at the time derivative (heat capacity) is represents the magnitude of the heat capacity concentrated at the point . An abstract operator method is developed for analyzing this equation. Estimates for the rate of convergence in special discrete energetic Sobolev's norms, compatible with the smoothness of the solution are obtained.
