Miscibility of gramicidin A-ethyl nonadecanoate in langmuir monolayers in the presence of salts dissolved in the subphase

The behavior of binary mixed Langmuir monolayers from gramicidin A (GA) and ethyl nonadecanoate (EN), spread on aqueous subphases containing NaCl and CaCl2, was investigated on the basis of the analysis of surface pressure-average area per molecule (pi-A) isotherms complemented with Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) images. Compression modulus versus surface pressure (C(S-1)-pi) curves indicate the existence of interactions in the GA-EN mixed monolayers at low surface pressures (below 5 mN m(-1)). However, for mixtures in which the ester is the predominant component, both GA and EN are miscible within regions from fully expanded to collapse. To examine the interactions between both components in the studied system, values of the mean molecular area per molecule (A12) were plotted as a function of molar fraction of gramicidin A (X(GA)). A12-X(GA) plots exhibit negative deviations from ideality at high surface pressures, wherein beta-helices of GA are vertically oriented in respect to the interface. However, at surface pressures below the plateau transition, which is due to reorientation of GA, the binary system obeys the additive rule. Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) was applied for a direct visualization of the monolayers morphologies. The obtained images prove that for molar ratios of GA > or = 0.3 and at surface pressures above 5 mN m(-1), both components are immiscible at the interface. The observed negative deviations from the additively rule were attributed to the formation of a three-dimensional phase in the mixed film, which provokes its contraction at the interface.     

Synthesis of 1,2,3-triazole-fused heterocycles via Pd-catalyzed cyclization of 5-iodotriazoles

A convenient approach toward polycyclic frameworks containing fused 1,2,3-triazoles is described. The synthesis consists of a Cu-catalyzed cycloaddition and an intramolecular Pd-catalyzed direct arylation or Heck reaction, and affords the products in good to excellent yields.     

Synthesis and anion-exchange reactions of a new anionic clay, α-magnesium hydroxide

A new anionic clay, α-magnesium hydroxide, was synthesized by hydrolysis of magnesium acetate in propylene glycol. The structure of this α-hydroxide is similar to that of hydrotalcites. It consists of positively charged magnesium hydroxide layers arising out of partial protonation of the hydroxyl groups of the [Mg(OH)(2)] layers and loosely held anions in the interlayer region. As expected it ages readily in water to give β-magnesium hydroxide, brucite. While anion-exchange reactions of α-magnesium hydroxide could not be carried out in aqueous medium a number of anion-exchange reactions could be carried out successfully in ethanol medium.     

Transferrin immunoextraction for determination of carbohydrate‐deficient transferrin in human serum by capillary zone electrophoresis

CZE‐based assays for carbohydrate‐deficient transferrin (CDT) in which serum is mixed with an Fe(III) ion‐containing solution prior to analysis are effective approaches for the determination of CDT in patient samples. Sera of patients with progressed diseases, however, are prone to interferences comigrating with transferrin (Tf) that prevent the proper determination of CDT by CZE in these samples. The need of a simple and economic approach to immunoextract Tf from human serum prompted us to investigate the use of a laboratory‐made anti‐Tf spin column containing polyclonal rabbit anti‐human Tf antibodies linked to Sepharose 4 Fast Flow beads. This article reports extraction column manufacturing and column characterization with sera having normal and elevated CDT levels. The developed procedure was applied to a number of relevant hepatology and dialysis patient samples and could thereby be shown to represent an effective method for extraction and concentration of all Tf isoforms. Furthermore, lipemic sera were delipidated using a mixture of diisopropyl ether and butanol prior to immunoextraction. CDT could unambiguously be determined in all pretreated samples.     

On the use of x-ray-excited optical luminescence (XEOL) for the analysis of multisite rare-earth systems

The realization of a XEOL (X-ray-excited optical luminescence) spectrometer is reported. The aim of the present paper is to show that a comparison between UV-excited emission spectra and XEOL spectra can be helpful in the assignment of some weak transitions for multiple site rare-earth compounds. The case of c-Y₂O₃ doped with Eu³⁺ cations is considered in some detail, as in the XEOL spectrum three lines to be assigned to transitions occurring at the centrosymmetrical Eu³⁺ (C_3i) site are strongly enhanced. Additional site-selective UV-excited emission spectra are also reported supporting the present discussion.
