Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy and micro carbon X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (C-XANES) can provide quantitative information regarding the distribution of the biopolymers cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin in vascular plant cell walls. In the case of angiosperms, flowering plants, C-XANES may also be able to distinguish variations in lignin monomer distributions throughout the cell wall. Polysaccharides are susceptible to soft X-ray irradiation induced chemical transformations that may complicate spectral analysis. The stability of a model polysaccharide, cellulose acetate, to variable doses of soft X-rays under conditions optimized for high quality C-XANES spectroscopy was investigated. The primary chemical effect of soft X-ray irradiation on cellulose acetate involves mass loss coincident with de-acetylation. A lesser amount of vinyl ketone formation also occurs. Reduction in irradiation dose via defocusing does enable high quality pristine spectra to be obtained. Radiation induced chemical modification studies of oak cell wall reveals that cellulose and hemicellulose are less labile to chemical modification than cellulose acetate. We study the conformations of polymer chains in a poor solvent, with and without bending rigidity, by means of a simple statistical
mechanics model. This model can be exactly solved for chains of length up to N = 55 using exact enumeration techniques. We analyze in detail the differences between the constant force and constant distance
ensembles for large but finite N. At low temperatures, and in the constant force ensemble, the force–extension curve shows multiple plateaus (intermediate
states), in contrast with the abrupt transition to an extended state prevailing in the N → ∞ limit. In the constant distance ensemble, the same curve provides a unified response to pulling and compressing forces,
and agrees qualitatively with recent experimental results. We identify a cross-over length, proportional to N, below which the critical force of unfolding decreases with temperature, while above, it increases with temperature. Finally,

An even split : In sharp contrast with the general behavior of Pd0 complexes, [Pd(IPr)(PCy3)] is able to activate the H? H bond. The resulting trans‐[Pd(H)2(IPr)(PCy3)] is the first isolated mononuclear dihydride palladium compound. A general approach to N-arylation and N-alkenylation of all five DNA/RNA nucleobases at the nitrogen atom normally attached to the sugar moiety in DNA or RNA has been developed. Various protected or masked nucleobases engaged readily in the copper-mediated Chan-Lam-Evans-modified Ullmann condensation with a range of different boronic acids at room temperature and were subsequently converted to the corresponding deprotected or unmasked adducts. Different N(3)-protecting groups were examined in the case of thymine, where the benzoyl group afforded the highest yields. A 4-alkylthio-substituted pyrimidin-2(1H)-one served as both a cytosine and a uracil precursor and was N-arylated and N-alkenylated in high yields. The interplay of such cornerstones of modern nonlinear fiber optics as a nonlinearity, stochasticity and polarization leads to variety of the noise induced instabilities including polarization attraction and escape phenomena harnessing of which is a key to unlocking the fiber optic systems specifications required in high resolution spectroscopy, metrology, biomedicine and telecommunications. Here, by using direct stochastic modeling, the mapping of interplay of the Raman scattering‐based nonlinearity, the random birefringence of a fiber, and the pump‐to‐signal intensity noise transfer has been done in terms of the fiber Raman amplifier parameters, namely polarization mode dispersion, the relative intensity noise of the pump laser, fiber length, and the signal power. The obtained results reveal conditions for emergence of the random birefringence‐induced resonance‐like enhancement of the gain fluctuations (stochastic anti‐resonance) accompanied by pulse broadening and rare events in the form of low power output signals having probability heavily deviated from the Gaussian distribution.
