By means of variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy we studied the thickness-dependent roughening temperature of Pb films grown on Cu(111), whose electronic structure and total energy is controlled by quantum well states created by the spatial confinement of electrons. Large scale STM images are employed to quantify the layer population, i.e., the fraction of the surface area covered by different Pb thicknesses, directly in the real space as a function of temperature. The roughening temperature oscillates repeatedly with bilayer periodicity plus a longer beating period, mirroring the thickness dependence of surface energy calculations. Conditions have been found to stabilize at 300 K Pb films of particular magic thicknesses, atomically flat over microns.  相似文献

We consider the equations of motion of n vortices of equal circulation in the plane, in a disk and on a sphere. The vortices form a polygonal equilibrium in a rotating frame of reference. We use numerical continuation in a boundary value setting to determine the Lyapunov families of periodic orbits that arise from the polygonal relative equilibrium. When the frequency of a Lyapunov orbit and the frequency of the rotating frame have a rational relationship, the orbit is also periodic in the inertial frame. A dense set of Lyapunov orbits, with frequencies satisfying a Diophantine equation, corresponds to choreographies of n vortices. We include numerical results for all cases, for various values of n, and we provide key details on the computational approach.  相似文献

Background

We have recorded responses from single neurons in murine visual cortex to determine the effectiveness of the input from the two murine cone photoreceptor mechanisms and whether there is any unique selectivity for cone inputs at this higher region of the visual system that would support the possibility of colour vision in mice. Each eye was stimulated by diffuse light, either 370 (strong stimulus for the ultra-violet (UV) cone opsin) or 505 nm (exclusively stimulating the middle wavelength sensitive (M) cone opsin), obtained from light emitting diodes (LEDs) in the presence of a strong adapting light that suppressed the responses of rods.

Results

Single cells responded to these diffuse stimuli in all areas of striate cortex. Two types of responsive cells were encountered. One type (135/323 – 42%) had little to no spontaneous activity and responded at either the on and/or the off phase of the light stimulus with a few impulses often of relatively large amplitude. A second type (166/323 – 51%) had spontaneous activity and responded tonically to light stimuli with impulses often of small amplitude. Most of the cells responded similarly to both spectral stimuli. A few (18/323 – 6%) responded strongly or exclusively to one or the other spectral stimulus and rarely in a spectrally opponent manner.

Conclusion

Most cells in murine striate cortex receive excitatory inputs from both UV- and M-cones. A small fraction shows either strong selectivity for one or the other cone mechanism and occasionally cone opponent responses. Cells that could underlie chromatic contrast detection are present but extremely rare in murine striate cortex.  相似文献

A new, mild, one-pot method for the synthesis of cyclobutabenzenes by the zirconium-promoted cross-coupling reaction of aryllithium compounds and alkenyl bromides is reported. Formation of an arynezirconocene complex and its regioselective coupling with an alkenyl bromide are the key steps of the process. This method allows the regio- and diastereoselective synthesis of functionalized cyclobutabenzene derivatives from simple and easily available starting materials.  相似文献

A comparative study on the mechanical and dielectric relaxation behavior of poly(5‐acryloxymethyl‐5‐methyl‐1,3‐dioxacyclohexane) (PAMMD), poly(5‐acryloxymethyl‐5‐ethyl‐1,3‐dioxacyclohexane) (PAMED), and poly(5‐methacryloxymethyl‐5‐ethyl‐1,3‐dioxacyclohexane) (PMAMED) is reported. The isochrones representing the mechanical and dielectric losses present prominent mechanical and dielectric β relaxations located at nearly the same temperature, approximately −80°C at 1 Hz, followed by ostensible glass–rubber or α relaxations centered in the neighborhood of 27, 30, and 125°C for PAMMD, PAMED, and PMAMED, respectively, at the same frequency. The values of the activation energy of the β dielectric relaxations of these polymers lie in the vicinity of 10 kcal mol−1, ∼ 2 kcal mol−1 lower than those corresponding to the mechanical relaxations. As usual, the temperature dependence of the mean‐relaxation times associated with both the dielectric and mechanical α relaxations is described by the Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann–Hesse (VFTH) equation. The dielectric relaxation spectra of PAMED and PAMMD present in the frequency domain, at temperatures slightly higher than Tg, the α and β relaxations at low and high frequencies, respectively. The high conductive contributions to the α relaxation of PMAMED preclude the possibility of isolating the dipolar component of this relaxation in this polymer. Attempts are made to estimate the temperature at which the α and β absorptions merge together to form the αβ relaxation in PAMMD and PAMED. Molecular Dynamics (MD) results, together with a comparative analysis of the spectra of several polymers, lead to the conclusion that flipping motions of the 1,3‐dioxacyclohexane ring may not be exclusively responsible for the β‐prominent relaxations that polymers containing dioxane and cyclohexane pendant groups in their structure present, as it is often assumed. The diffusion coefficient of ionic species, responsible for the high conductivity exhibited by these polymers in the α relaxation, is semiquantitatively calculated using a theory that assumes that this process arises from MWS effects, taking place in the bulk, combined with Nernst–Planckian electrodynamic effects, due to interfacial polarization in the films. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. GaN and InGaN nanocolumns of various compositions are studied by room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) under different ambient conditions. GaN nanocolumns exhibit a reversible quenching upon exposure to air under constant UV excitation, following a t−1/2 time dependence and resulting in a total reduction of intensity by 85–90%, as compared to PL measured in vacuum, with no spectral change. This effect is not observed when exposing the samples to pure nitrogen. We attribute this effect to photoabsorption and photodesorption of oxygen that modifies the surface potential bending. InGaN nanocolumns, under the same experimental conditions do not show the same quenching features: The high-energy part of the broad PL line is not modified by exposure to air, whereas a lower-energy part, which does quench by 80–90%, can now be distinguished. We discuss the different behaviors in terms of carrier localization and possible composition or strain gradients in the InGaN nanocolumns.  相似文献

A method of dielectric spectroscopy was used to determine the electric properties of chemically synthesized polyaniline (PANI) with special emphasis on the influence of acid and water doping levels on the polymer properties. The dependence of the dielectric loss factor (tan δ) on the temperature (in the range from − 100 to + 100°C) and the frequencies of the ac voltage (F = 0.1–30 000 Hz; amplitude of the voltage 1 V) were measured. They were subsequently transformed into the temperature and frequency dependences of a complex electric modulus, M*. Tan δ(F, T) and M(F, T)) presentations were both used in the analysis of the electric properties of PANI samples to compare their informative possibilities. At least two modes of the polymer response to varying temperature and frequency were resolved. Each mode corresponds to a certain area in an electric map of the system (log F versus 1/T plane) with their positions displaced towards higher frequencies and lower temperature with increases of both acid and water concentration in PANI. This effect is interpreted in terms of a unified mechanism of interaction of water and acid molecules with polymer backbone.  相似文献

The performance of nitride-based photodetectors is investigated beyond the usual near-UV (400–300 nm) and mid-UV (300–200 nm) operation ranges. The responses of metal–semiconductor–metal (MSM) photodiodes were analyzed in the vacuum–UV and soft X-ray regions. To interpret the results, the absorption properties and the attributes of each of the photons with energies for producing multiple electron–hole pairs were considered. The soft X-ray characterization showed that in-plane MSMs worked efficiently up to photon energies of 600 eV. Above this value, the absorption decrease makes the diffusion length and layer thickness become critical parameters for the detector behavior. To perform detection in the violet and near-UV, InGaN-based photoconductors were fabricated and spectrally characterized. The devices presented abrupt wavelength cut-offs, demonstrating that the InGaN compositional fluctuations were tolerable up to In contents of 10% for fabricating selective photodetectors. Back-face illumination allowed us to obtain bandpass detectors for these spectral ranges.  相似文献
