Thermodynamic studies of some binary mixtures containing a self-associated component. II. Excess volumes of some mixtures of tetrahydrofuran with alcohols

Excess volumes of mixing, V^E, for binary mixtures of tetrahydrofuran (THF) with methanol, ethanol, n-butanol, tert-butanol, 2-bromoethanol and ethylene glycol have been determined from the experimental density measurements at 298.15 K over the entire composition range. The V^E data follow the order: ethylene glycol < 2-bromoethanol < methanol < ethanol < n-butanol < tert-butanol. The results have been explained in terms of self-association and the hydrogen bond-donating abilities of alcohols.     

Depression in the cloud point of Tween in the presence of glycol additives and triblock polymers

Cloud point (C_P) measurements of Tween 20 and Tween 80 were carried out in the presence of various glycol oligomers and triblock polymers (TBP). The cloud points of both Tween 20 and 80 decrease in the presence of both types of additives. Among the glycol oligomeric additives, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether was found to reduce the C_P maximum. An increase in the repeating units of polymeric glycol additives leads to a decrease in C_P. Reduction in the C_P in the presence of TBP depends upon the increase in hydrophobic/hydrophilic ratio among the polypropylene to polyethylene units.     

One Pot One Step Photoconversion of Pulvinic Acid Dilactone to p-Methoxyvulpinic Acid

The utility of singlet oxygen-methanol as a reagent for nuclear methoxylation of complex organic natural products is illustrated by a one pot one step photoconversion of pulvinic acid dilactone to p-methoxyvulpinic acid. The study is important from biogenetic considerations.     

An organocatalytic synthesis of N-sulfonyl imines using chloramine-T in aqueous medium

N-Sulfonyl imines have been synthesized in good to excellent yields from aldehydes and chloramine-T using proline as an organocatalyst in aqueous medium at ambient temperature. The protocol is applicable to a wide range of aldehydes, especially enals exhibit remarkable efficiency in the reaction. The reaction presumably occurs via iminium activation and opens new avenues for the synthesis of N-sulfonyl imines under environmentally benign and mild conditions.     

Identification of groundwater discharge in Cuddalore coast,Tamil Nadu using radium isotopes

For the optimal exploitation and management of coastal aquifers of Tamil Nadu, it is essential to evaluate the groundwater outflow into the sea also called as submarine groundwater discharge. In this study, radium isotopes (^223,224Ra) were employed to understand the groundwater discharge in coastal areas of Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu. Sea water samples (100 L) were collected from various locations of Cuddalore coast in October 2011 and passed through Mn-impregnated acrylic fiber columns. These acrylic columns were analyzed for ^223,224Ra activities using radium delayed coincidence counter. The observed higher activities of ^223,224Ra excess (0.02 ± 0.001–3.28 ± 0.16 and 64 ± 3–380 ± 19 mBq/100 L respectively) indicate that groundwater discharge occurs in this coastal region.     

Calix[4]arene-based ditopic receptors for simultaneous recognition of fluoride and cobalt(II) ions

A series of calix[4]arene based ditopic receptors possessing bipyridyl and hydrazone units have been synthesized and evaluated for ionic recognition. It has been observed that the synthesized derivatives function as allosteric receptors for simultaneous recognition of Co²⁺and F^? ions through non-covalent interactions. Significant bathochromic shifts in the UV–visible spectrum with a profound colour change promise their use to engineer novel applications.     

Heritability of Stroop and flanker performance in 12-year old children

Background  

There is great interest in appropriate phenotypes that serve as indicator of genetically transmitted frontal (dys)function, such as ADHD. Here we investigate the ability to deal with response conflict, and we ask to what extent performance variation on response interference tasks is caused by genetic variation. We tested a large sample of 12-year old monozygotic and dizygotic twins on two well-known and closely related response interference tasks; the color Stroop task and the Eriksen flanker task. Using structural equation modelling we assessed the heritability of several performance indices derived from those tasks.
