We report results from Experiment 871, performed at the BNL AGS, of a measurement of the branching ratio K(0)(L)-->&mgr;(+)&mgr;(-) with respect to the CP-violating mode K(0)(L)-->pi(+)pi(-). This experiment detected over 6200 candidate &mgr;(+)&mgr;(-) events, a factor of 6 more than that seen in all previous measurements combined. The resulting branching ratio gamma(K(0)(L)-->&mgr;(+)&mgr;(-))/gamma(K(0)(L)-->pi(+)pi(-)) = (3. 474+/-0.057)x10(-6) leads to a branching fraction B(K(0)(L)-->&mgr;(+)&mgr;(-)) = (7.18+/-0.17)x10(-9), which is consistent with the current world average, and reduces the uncertainty in this decay mode by a factor of 3.  相似文献

The paper treats two topics. We obtain new characterizations of quasidiscs using theλ-lemma. We study regularb-groups by combining results on holomorphic families of injections with theorems on algebraic convergence of Kleinian groups and the structure of the Eichler cohomology spaces. We introduce a number of new tools for the study of relatively hyperbolic groups. First, given a relatively hyperbolic group G, we construct a nice combinatorial Gromov hyperbolic model space acted on properly by G, which reflects the relative hyperbolicity of G in many natural ways. Second, we construct two useful bicombings on this space. The first of these, preferred paths, is combinatorial in nature and allows us to define the second, a relatively hyperbolic version of a construction of Mineyev. As an application, we prove a group-theoretic analog of the Gromov-Thurston 2π Theorem in the context of relatively hyperbolic groups. The first author was supported in part by NSF Grant DMS-0504251. High-level ab initio calculations have been made for fluoromethylamine to study structural and energetic effects of the relative orientation of the N lone pair to the C? F bond. The anti-conformer (N lone pair anti-planar to the C? F bond) corresponds to the global energy minimum. It has the longest C? F distance, the shortest C? N distance, and is 7.5 kcal·mol?1 more stable than the related perpendicular conformation (lone pair perpendicular to the C? F bond). The syn-conformation also shows hallmarks of the anomeric effect: long C? F bond, short C? N bond, and energetic stability when allowance is made for the two pairs of eclipsed hydrogens. The transition state for N inversion is close to the syn-structure; rotation about the C? N bond is strongly coupled with this inversion process. Small bond distance changes of ca. 0.02 Å between parallel and perpendicular conformations are associated with dissociation energy differences of ca. 30 kcal·mol?1. Various criteria for assessing the strength of the anomeric effect are discussed.  相似文献

Stabilized Temperature Platform Furnace (STPF) methods have been adapted and altered to reduce the analytical time to less than 1 min per sample with no loss of analytical precision or accuracy. It is shown that this could be further reduced to about 30 s per sample if certain changes in instrumentation are implemented, especially in the software and firmware that control the autosampler. The sample uptake rate for the autosampler should overlap the cooldown of the tube from the prior determination. Also, the sample should be deposited onto a heated platform. In this work the pyrolysis step and, in most cases, the use of a matrix modifier has been omitted. Since backgrounds were therefore larger, the use of Zeeman correction was usually required, but continuum background correction was not tried. To confirm that these fast analytical methods might be practical, more than 10 standard reference materials were analyzed for several elements including Pb, Cd, Cu, Ni, As and Cr. The paper is not primarily intended to provide routine and reliable methods; it is intended to test the feasibility of these fast methods.  相似文献

An Algebraic Thinking Test was given to 116 students aged 12–14, at the end of each of three years. This age span crosses two levels of school in New Zealand. This test assessed their ability to represent compensation in the four arithmetic operations both numerically and with letters for variables. The analyses of these results, together with the results from separate interviews designed to report individual progress of students in the New Zealand Numeracy Project, showed that students who had developed advanced mental strategies for dealing with additive, multiplicative and proportional operations, were the students who were capable of making full use of the alphanumeric symbols of algebra. These results, taken together with earlier studies by the authors, led to a proposal for a “pathway for algebraic thinking” accessible to all students.  相似文献

Results are reported from a search for active to sterile neutrino oscillations in the MINOS long-baseline experiment, based on the observation of neutral-current neutrino interactions, from an exposure to the NuMI neutrino beam of 7.07×10(20) protons on target. A total of 802 neutral-current event candidates is observed in the Far Detector, compared to an expected number of 754 ± 28(stat) ± 37(syst) for oscillations among three active flavors. The fraction f(s) of disappearing ν(μ) that may transition to ν(s) is found to be less than 22% at the 90% C.L.  相似文献

Measurements of neutrino oscillations using the disappearance of muon neutrinos from the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beam as observed by the two MINOS detectors are reported. New analysis methods have been applied to an enlarged data sample from an exposure of 7.25×10(20) protons on target. A fit to neutrino oscillations yields values of |Δm(2)|=(2.32(-0.08)(+0.12))×10(-3) eV(2) for the atmospheric mass splitting and sin(2)(2θ)>0.90 (90% C.L.) for the mixing angle. Pure neutrino decay and quantum decoherence hypotheses are excluded at 7 and 9 standard deviations, respectively.  相似文献

We calculate the relaxation, rise, and frequency dependence of the parallel polarization of counterions condensed on rodlike polyelectrolytes and charged colloids. Emphasis is placed on an effective counterion mobility along the rod as strongly influenced by electrostatic interactions.  相似文献
