The influence of a strong high-frequency field on the stratification of the positive column of a D-C glow discharge

An experimental study is made of the damping of moving striations in a d-c glow discharge by a strong high-frequency field. The results of measurement are in agreement with existing conceptions on the production and mechanism of propagation of moving striations. Apart from the process of damping the paper also describes the standing stratification of the positive column of a d-c discharge as a result of a superposed high-frequency discharge.

Die direkte jodometrische Bestimmung von Hydroxylamin

Zusammenfassung Es wird eine Methode zur direkten jodometrischen Hydroxylaminbestimmung beschrieben, bei der die Titration in Anwesenheit von Magnesiumoxyd erfolgt. Die Methode ist schnell ausführbar, die Resultate sind ausreichend genau und lassen sich gut reproduzieren.

On multisplitting methods for band matrices

Summary. We present new theoretical results on two classes of multisplitting methods for solving linear systems iteratively. These classes are based on overlapping blocks of the underlying coefficient matrix which is assumed to be a band matrix. We show that under suitable conditions the spectral radius of the iteration matrix does not depend on the weights of the method even if these weights are allowed to be negative. For a certain class of splittings we prove an optimality result for with respect to the weights provided that is an M–matrix. This result is based on the fact that the multisplitting method can be represented by a single splitting which in our situation surprisingly turns out to be a regular splitting. Furthermore we show by numerical examples that weighting factors may considerably improve the convergence. Received July 18, 1994 / Revised version received November 20, 1995     

Preparation of Optical Cores of Silica Optical Fibers by the Sol-Gel Method

Preforms for drawing silica optical fibers have been fabricated by using the MCVD method for the preparation of the optical claddings and the sol-gel method for the preparation of the optical cores consisting of TiO₂−SiO₂ or RE³⁺−Al₂O₃−P₂O₅−SiO₂ (RE=Er, Yb) glasses. A novel method has been developed for depositing thin gel layers on the inner silica tube wall, under rotation of the tube inclined at a small angle to the horizontal. The gel layers have been deposited from sols prepared by mixing Si(OC₂H₅)₄, POCl₃, Ti(n-OC₄H₉)₄, AlCl₃, ErCl₃, YbCl₃ H₂O, C₂H₅OH and HCl. The gel layers deposited using these sols on the inner tube wall were heat-treated in a flow of CCl₄ or POCl₃ with O₂ at temperatures of from 800° to 1400°C. After collapsing the composite tube into a preform, an optical fiber has been drawn. The refractive-index profiles of the preforms and the attenuation spectra of the drawn fibers are shown, as well as some results on the lasing characteristics of Yb³⁺ sensitized, Er³⁺ doped fibers.
