Statistical mechanics of the glass transition in one-component liquids with an anisotropic potential

We study a recently introduced model of one-component glass-forming liquids whose constituents interact with an anisotropic potential. This system is interesting per se and as a model of liquids such as glycerol (interacting via hydrogen bonds) which are excellent glass formers. We work out the statistical mechanics of this system, encoding the liquid and glass disorder using appropriate quasiparticles (36 of them). The theory provides a full explanation of the glass transition phenomenology, including the identification of a diverging length scale and a relation between the structural changes and the diverging relaxation times.     

Formation of regular clusters through self-association of intramolecularly hypercrosslinked polystyrene-type nanosponges

Atactic polystyrene of M = 330,000 Da and M_w/M_n = 1.04 was subjected to chloromethylation. By the heating of chloromethylpolystyrene with SnCl₄ in a very dilute solution in ethylene dichloride, the polymeric coils were converted into intramolecularly hypercrosslinked macromolecules, nanosponges, of molecular weight of about 370,000 Da and a diameter of about 17 nm. When in solution, the nanosponges tend to reversibly self-assemble into regular clusters. Size exclusion chromatography and sedimentation analysis corroborate the suggestion that the clusters consist of 13 spherical subunits and thus acquire a molecular weight of about 5.0 × 10⁶ Da and a diameter of about 45 nm. © John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Auger spectroscopy of the fracture surface of 1X18H10T stainless steel doped with helium and hydrogen

Variation of the element composition of the fracture surface of 1X18H10T steel specimens in unirradiated and helium and hydrogen doped states during strain at 300, 600, and 800°C in the chamber of the special Auger-spectrometer has been investigated. It has been shown that in helium and hydrogen doped steel versus unirradiated state the fracture surface is enriched with phosphorus and nickel and impoverished with sulphur more intensively.     

Synthesis of 7,8‐Dihydrothieno[3′,2′:4,5]pyrrolo[1,2‐a]pyrazin‐5(6H)‐ones Using a Modification of Four‐Component Ugi Reaction

We describe an efficient synthesis of novel 7,8‐dihydrothieno [3′,2′:4,5]pyrrolo[1,2‐a]pyrazin‐5(6H)‐one heterocyclic structures. The target compounds were prepared by a novel modification of four‐component Ugi reaction of heterocyclic bifunctional keto acids, isonitriles, and amines. We demonstrate the usefulness and versatility of the developed approach, which is amenable to production of combinatorial libraries.
