Suppression of Q-switching instabilities with an actively controlled intracavity loss modulator is demonstrated in an Er-doped waveguide laser that is mode locked with a slow saturable absorber at repetition rates of as much as 100 MHz. By automatic gain control in the feedback loop, stable mode locking is achieved over the entire parameter range of the laser. This approach renders laser stabilization independent of the characteristics of the gain medium and intracavity power. The pulse-shaping dynamics is not affected by the presence of the intracavity loss modulator. 相似文献

Femtosecond fiber lasers with pulse energies above 10 nJ 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A series of experiments aimed at determining the maximum pulse energy that can be produced by a femtosecond fiber laser is reported. Exploiting modes of pulse propagation that avoid wave breaking in a Yb fiber laser allows pulse energies up to 14 nJ to be achieved. The pulses can be dechirped to sub-100-fs duration to produce peak powers that reach 100 kW. The limitations to the maximum pulse energy are discussed. 相似文献

We experimentally demonstrate that one can exploit nonlinear phase shifts produced in type I phase-mismatched second-harmonic generation to produce intensity-dependent polarization evolution with 100-fs pulses. An amplitude modulator based on nonlinear polarization rotation provides passive amplitude-modulation depth of up to ~50%. Applications of the amplitude and phase modulations to mode locking of femtosecond bulk and fiber lasers are promising and are discussed. 相似文献

Thermal effects, which limit the average power, can be minimized by using low-doped, longer gain fibers, whereas the presence of nonlinear effects requires use of high-doped, shorter fibers to maximize the peak power. We propose the use of varying doping levels along the gain fiber to circumvent these opposing requirements. By analogy to dispersion management and nonlinearity management, we refer to this scheme as doping management. As a practical first implementation, we report on the development of a fiber laser-amplifier system, the last stage of which has a hybrid gain fiber composed of high-doped and low-doped Yb fibers. The amplifier generates 100?W at 100?MHz with pulse energy of 1 μJ. The seed source is a passively mode-locked fiber oscillator operating in the all-normal-dispersion regime. The amplifier comprises three stages, which are all-fiber-integrated, delivering 13?ps pulses at full power. By optionally placing a grating compressor after the first stage amplifier, chirp of the seed pulses can be controlled, which allows an extra degree of freedom in the interplay between dispersion and self-phase modulation. This way, the laser delivers 4.5?ps pulses with ~200 kW peak power directly from fiber, without using external pulse compression. 相似文献

We have synthesized a series of chalcogenide glasses from the As-S-Se system that is designed to have strong nonlinearities. Measurements reveal that many of these glasses offer optical Kerr nonlinearities greater than 400 times that of fused silica at 1.25 and 1.55mum and figures of merit for all-optical switching greater than 5 at 1.55mum . 相似文献

We report the generation of 6-nJ chirped pulses from a mode-locked Yb fiber laser at 1.03 micrometre. A linear anomalous-dispersion segment suppresses wave-breaking effects of solitonlike pulse shaping at high energies. The dechirped pulse duration is 50 fs, and the energy is 5 nJ. This laser produces twice the pulse energy and average power, and approximately five times the peak power, of the previous best mode-locked fiber laser. It is to our knowledge the first fiber laser that directly offers performance similar to that of solid-state lasers such as Ti:sapphire. 相似文献

Scientists in terahertz (THz) wave technologies have benefited from the recent developments in ultrafast laser technologies and RF technologies and applied these new gained techniques into characterizing a wide variety of phenomena. Undoubtedly, the most successful of these applications has been in the development of time-domain terahertz spectroscopic and imaging systems which has been utilized in the characterization of dielectrics and semiconductors. This pulsed technique has allowed users to characterize dynamical behavior inside materials under illumination with picosecond resolution. Typically pump/probe or similar dynamical measurements require the use of amplified pulses derived from free-space solid state lasers in the $\upmu $ J–mJ range and since interferometric techniques are typically used in pulsed measurements the measurement time of a THz spectrum can last at least tens of minutes. Better systems can be realized based on fiber laser technologies. Here we discuss the advantages of a THz spectrometer driven by an ultrafast Ytterbium doped fiber laser whose repetition rate can be tuned rapidly allowing for rapid dynamical measurements. The efficient gain medium, robust operation and compact design of the system opens up the possibility of exploring rapid detection of various materials as well as studying dynamical behavior using the high brightness source. 相似文献
