Origin and development of the International Confederation for Thermal Analysis (ICTA)

The history of ICTA, from its conception at the First International Conference on Thermal Analysis in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1965 through the subsequent eight Conferences to the 10th ICTA Congress in Hatfield, England, in 1992, is outlined. Brief biographies of Past-Presidents are appended.     

Unusual selectivity of unprotected aziridines in palladium-catalyzed allylic amination enables facile preparation of branched aziridines

Functionalized branched aziridines can be prepared in high yields and with high levels of regioselectivity using unprotected aziridines as nitrogen sources in palladium-catalyzed allylic amination. High levels of enantioselectivity can be achieved with BINAP on palladium. This methodology allows for strategic placement of an aziridine-containing fragment within a complex molecule environment for further elaboration.     

The first structural and spectroscopic characterization of a neptunyl polyoxometalate complex

The reaction between PW9O349- and NpO2+ has yielded the first structurally characterized neptunyl(V) polyoxometalate complex, [Na2(NpO2)2(A-PW9O34)2]14-. This complex is isostructural with the uranyl(VI) analogue, and there is also spectroscopic evidence for its existence in solution. The complex is readily extracted into toluene, and this may have significance in the sequestering and/or separation of the neptunyl ion in terms of nuclear waste management.     

Comparison of uncoated, pyro-coated and totally pyrolytic graphite tubes for the HGA-500 electrothermal atomiser

The analytical performance of three uncoated electrographite tubes, three pyro-coated electrographite tubes, one tantalum carbide (TaC) coated electrographite tube, and three totally pyrolytic graphite (TPG) tubes has been evaluated and compared. A test programme was devised to determine the useful operational lifetime of each tube, and assess the influence of tube age on the sensitivity of lead, manganese and vanadium measurements by atomic absorption spectrometry. The TPG tubes were found to be more durable than the other types studied, but the lifetime advantage depended on the thickness of the pyrolytic graphite. The best TPG tube, of 720 μm wall-thickness, lasted 2.5 times longer than the pyro-coated tubes, and 5 times longer than the uncoated electrographite tubes.The TPG tubes gave slightly poorer AAS sensitivity for lead, equivalent sensitivity for manganese, and 4 times better sensitivity for vanadium than the pyro-coated electrographite tubes. Also, with TPG, signal magnitude was more consistent throughout the lifetime of a tube. For each of the test elements studied, poorest sensitivity was encountered with the TaC-coated electrographite tube.     

Synthesis of two dihydropyrroloindoledione‐based copolymers for organic electronics

Two novel dihydropyrroloindoledione (DPID)‐based copolymers have been synthesized in a two directional approach and characterized (gel permeation chromatography (GPC), ultraviolet‐visible (UV–vis), cyclic voltammetry, and computational models). These planar, broad absorption copolymers show promise for use in organic electronics, with deep energy levels and low bandgaps. The two‐directional Knoevenagel condensation used demonstrates the versatility of DPID as a useful yet underexploited conjugated unit. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The solution of large-scale least-squares problems on supercomputers

We discuss methods for solving medium to large-scale sparse least-squares problems on supercomputers, illustrating our remarks by experiments on the CRAY-2 supercomputer at Harwell. The method we are primarily concerned with is an augmented system approach which has the merit of both robustness and accuracy, in addition to a kernel operation that is just the solution of a symmetric indefinite system. We consider extensions to handle weighted and constrained problems, and include experiments on systems similar to those arising in the Karmarkar algorithm for linear programming. We indicate how recent improvements to the kernel software could greatly improve the performance of the least-squares code.This paper is based on an invited talk by the author at a Workshop on Supercomputers and Large-Scale Optimization held at the Minnesota Supercomputing Center on 16th to 18th May, 1988.     

Subregular Representations of {\mathfrak{s}}{\mathfrak{l}}_n and Simple Singularities of Type A n−1

Alexander Premet has stated the following problem: what is a relation between subregular nilpotent representations of a classical semisimple restricted Lie algebra and non-commutative deformations of the corresponding singularities? We solve this problem for type A.
