The electronic structures of cis-polyacetylene

The electronic structures of two possible forms of the so-called $\text{cis}$-skeletal polyacetylene ($\text{cis}$-polyacetylene) are investigated on the basis of the tight-binding LCAO-SCF-MO method under the CNDO/2 version. The analyses of the total energies per unit cell, the π bond orders and the interatomic interaction energies as to the both forms predict the $\text{cis}$-transoid backbone for the $\text{cis}$-polyacetylene. The examination of the patterns of particular molecular orbitals of the hypothetical $\text{cis}$-polymer with equal C-C bond lengths also supports the $\text{cis}$-transoid form.     

Spontaneous luminescence due to high density electron-hole plasma in GaAs under nano- and pico-second pulse excitation

Spontaneous luminescence due to high density electron-hole plasma in GaAs is observed at 4.2 K under nano- and pico-second pulse excitation. From the pico-second time-resolved spectra, it is found that the hot carriers are cooled down rapidly within 150 psec, and the changes of spectra are not appreciable in the later stage. One may consider, together with results of the spectral shape analysis, that the electron-hole liquid formation is improbable at least within the time range observed.     

Experiments on plasma heating in the lower hybrid frequency range

Experimental results of lower hybrid heating in a small tokamak are described. When rf power is applied, a high energy tail of ions is produced, whether or not there is a lower hybrid resonance layer (LHR layer) in the plasma column, though bulk ion heating is not observed. The electron temperature in the plasma surface increases, while the electrons in the center lose their energy, which is related to an impurity ion flux diffusing from the outside of the plasma.     

CO2 laser Stark spectroscopy of the Coriolis-coupled ν2 and ν5 bands of CD3Br

The ν₂ (CD₃ symmetrical deformation) and ν₅ (CD₃ degenerate deformation) fundamental bands of CD₃Br were studied by 9.4- and 10.4-μm CO₂ laser Stark spectroscopy. Stark resonances originating from 28 and 53 rovibrational transitions of the ν₂ and ν₅ bands, respectively, were assigned for each of the isotopic species, CD₃⁷⁹Br and CD₃⁸¹Br. These two bands were simultaneously analyzed with explicit inclusion of the ν₂-ν₅ Coriolis interaction, yielding precise molecular constants in the ν₂ and ν₅ excited states as well as the Coriolis coupling constant. The molecular constants obtained are consistent between the two isotopic species and are in good agreement with the results of high-resolution infrared studies.
