Ion Association and Hydration in Aqueous Solutions of Nickel(II) and Cobalt(II) Sulfate

Aqueous solutions of nickel(II) and cobalt(II) sulfate have been investigated at 25 ^∘C by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) over a wide range of frequencies (0.2 ≤ ν (GHz) ≤ 89) and salt concentrations (0.025 ≤ c(mol-L⁻¹) ≤ 1.4). The spectra indicate, as for MgSO₄(aq) studied previously, the simultaneous presence of double solvent-separated, solvent-shared and contact ion pairs in both NiSO₄(aq) and CoSO₄(aq). The stepwise formation constants for each ion-pair type and the overall association constant, obtained from the data are in good agreement with ultrasonic relaxation and other estimates. The DR spectra at higher concentrations (c ≥ 0.5 mol-L⁻¹) suggest the existence of a nonlinear triple ion M₂SO₄²⁺(aq). Consistent with the very strong hydration of the salts, which have ‘effective’ hydration numbers approaching 27 at infinite dilution, there are no significant differences in any of the relaxation or thermodynamic parameters for NiSO₄(aq) and CoSO₄(aq), except that the triple ion appears to be somewhat more stable for the latter.     

Extraction and characterization of adenovirus

A new methodology for the extraction and characterization of proteins from Coomassie-stained sodium dodecylsulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) has been described. The utility of this methodology was demonstrated in the characterization of adenovirus proteins. The key steps in the extraction and destaining process involve washing the excised band with a combination of solvents that include 10% acetic acid, acetonitrile, methanol, and formic acid:water:isopropanol mixture. By using this procedure, we determined adenovirus proteins with molecular weights ranging from 10,000 to 110,000 Da by MALDI-MS, obtaining a detection limit of approximately 6 pmol. Parallel experiments were successfully carried out to analyze adenovirus proteins from Cu-stained gels. It was observed that increase in laser intensity resulted in significant improvements in the quality of MALDI mass spectra for the analysis of inefficiently destained proteins from Cu-stained gels.

Separation of the phenolic fraction of Corydalis ochotensis afforded a new spirobenzylisoquinoline alkaloid, isoochotensine ( 1 ) and three known alkaloids, ochotensine ( 3 ), cheilanthifoline ( 7 ), and lienkonine ( 9 ) as their acetyl derivatives together with a known nonphenolic alkaloid, ochotensimine ( 5 ). Paraquat guest induced hydrogen-bonding modes of a hydrazide-derived bis(meta-phenylene)-32-crown-10 host in the solid state

A hydrazide-derived bis(meta-phenylene)-32-crown-10 host showed a dimeric structure via quadruple N-H?O hydrogen bonds, but a polymeric structure via two N-H?O hydrogen bonds and two C-H?O hydrogen bonds at each knot in the presence of paraquat in the solid state, which led to a novel poly(taco complex) and ordering arrangement of the guest molecules indirectly.
