On the theory of the Buckingham effect

We apply general arguments (based on spatial transformation properties, intrinsic symmetry and dimensional analysis) to the theory of the Buckingham effect (electric-field–gradient-induced birefringence in a gas). These yield, in a simple manner, the temperature-dependent and temperature-independent terms in the birefringence (each to within a numerical factor), and also the expression, derived by Buckingham and Longuet-Higgins, for the effective quadrupole centre of a molecule. We show in addition how the calculation of the two numerical factors can be simplified in our approach.

The Voice Foundation Symposia have played a seminal and central role in fostering integration among disciplines. The result has been an improvement in the knowledge and practice in each field. And the future promises to be even more informative and exciting.     

蒙药新-Ⅱ中微量硒的测定

采用硒 -硫氰酸钾 -罗丹明 B-明胶 - OP体系分光光度法测定蒙药新 - 中微量硒。其含量为 6 .6—7.3μg· g-1 ,回收率为 94 %— 95 %。     

79Kr高自旋超形变的观测

通过５５Ｍｎ（３０Ｓｉ,αｐｎ）反应布居了７９Ｋｒ的高自旋态．用ＧＡＳＰ阵列配以由４０个ΔＥ×ＥＳｉ（Ａｕ）望远镜所组成的带电粒子球实现γγγ－带电粒子符合测量．观测到由相对强度为（２．７±０．３）％的８条级联γ跃迁所组成的７９Ｋｒ高自旋超形变转动带．除了在转动频率ω＞０．９５ＭｅＶ处急剧下降外,该带的动力学转动惯量近乎常数（22ñ2／ＭｅＶ）并被解释为具有四极形变参数β２＝０．５１以及本征侵入组态为π５０ν５１． High-spinstates in 79Kr were populated via the fusion evaporation reaction 55Mn (30Si,αpn)at 130 MeV.Promptγ γγ charged particle coincidences were measured by using the GASP array in conjunction with the ΔE×E Si(Au) charged particle ball.Asu perdeformed band consisting of 8 γ ray transitions with an intensity of (2.7±0.3)% has been indentified in 79Kr.The dynamic moment of inertia for the band is nearly constant at approxately 22ñ2/MeV below arotational frequency of 0.95 MeV...     

Calibration of a Bonner sphere extension (BSE) for high-energy neutron spectrometry

In a recent work, we constructed modular multisphere system which expands upon the design of an existing, commercially available Bonner sphere system by adding concentric shells of copper, tungsten, or lead. Our modular multisphere system is referred to as the Bonner Sphere Extension (BSE). The BSE was tested in a high energy neutron beam (thermal to 800 MeV) at Los Alamos Neutron Science Center and provided improvement in the measurement of the neutron spectrum in the energy regions above 20 MeV when compared to the standard BSS (Burgett, 2008 and Howell et al., 2009).However, when the initial test of the system was carried-out at LANSCE, the BSE had not yet been calibrated. Therefore the objective of the present study was to perform calibration measurements. These calibration measurements were carried out using monoenergetic neutron ISO 8529-1 reference beams at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Braunschweig, Germany. The following monoenergetic reference beams were used for these experiments: 14.8 MeV, 1.2 MeV, 565 keV, and 144 keV. Response functions for the BSE were calculated using the Monte Carlo N-Particle Code, eXtended (MCNPX). The percent difference between the measured and calculated responses was calculated for each sphere and energy. The difference between measured and calculated responses for individual spheres ranged between 7.9 % and 16.7 % and the arithmetic mean for all spheres was (10.9 ± 1.8) %. These sphere specific correction factors will be applied for all future measurements carried-out with the BSE.     

Slow-light fourier transform interferometer

We describe a new type of Fourier transform (FT) interferometer in which the tunable optical delay between the two arms is realized by using a continuously variable slow-light medium instead of a moving arm as in a conventional setup. The spectral resolution of such a FT interferometer exceeds that of a conventional setup of comparable size by a factor equal to the maximum group index of the slow-light medium. The scheme is experimentally demonstrated by using a rubidium atomic vapor cell as the tunable slow-light medium, and the spectral resolution is enhanced by a factor of approximately 100.     

Thermal degradation of trimethylolpropane/adipic acid hyperbranched poly(ester)s

Hyperbranched poly(ester)s offer attractive features for applications in a number of areas, particularly as platforms for the support of controlled release actives in the agricultural and biomedical fields. Such materials have been generated from trimethylolpropane and adipic acid, and fully characterized using chromatographic, spectroscopic, and thermal methods. The thermal stability of these polymers has been assessed using thermogravimetry and infrared spectroscopy. The degradation characteristics of these materials have been compared to those of two linear adipic acid polymers. The prominent feature of the thermal degradation of the hyperbranched poly(ester)s is ether formation while that for the comparable linear poly(ester)s is ester pyrolysis resulting in chain scission.
