High resolution capillary gas chromatographic hydrocarbon-type analysis of naphtha and gasoline

A slightly modified, commercially available high resolution capillary gas chromatograph and a PC-based data processing system running proprietary software (“PONA”) have been employed in the development of a system for petroleum type analysis which would be equivalent or superior to the FIA (fluorescent indicator adsorption) method in terms of ease of use and the speed, variety, and accuracy of the analytical data produced. The system is capable of performing identification and quantitation of most of the individual components in a complex gasoline sample consisting of more than 230 components and can report weight percentage and/or volume percentage for each component as well as types by carbon number (e.g., isoparaffins, normal paraffins, olefins, naphthenes, aromatic compounds) within a ca. 70 minute analysis cycle. Precolumn sulfonation to trap olefins and aromatic compounds has been used as an complementary technique to the basic mass spectrometric identification of components of interest. The estimation of correction factors for weight percentage (or volume percentage) calculation are also discussed. Comparisons are made between this system and others, and the results indicate that the proposed method supersedes the conventional method employing FIA.     

Development of a new software for the X-ray structural analysis of polymer crystals by utilizing the X-ray imaging plate system

A software and some useful tools have been developed for identifying individual x-ray reflectional peaks recorded with an x-ray imaging plate system. These techniques were applied to analyze the crystal structure of uniaxially oriented polymer samples. Characteristic features of the present method may be summarized as follows. (1) The indexing of the observed reflections and the determination of the unit cell parameters can be made easily on the display of the computer. (2) The integrated intensity of the individual component of the overlapped reflections can be evaluated quantitatively through the curve separation technique. The R_merge's for the equivalent reflections were 5–6%, indicating the exact evaluation of the integrated intensities. (3) The thus obtained reflectional data were successfully utilized for the extraction of the initial structural models by the direct method. The actual applications have been made for orthorhombic polyethylene, trigonal polyoxymethylene, and isotactic polybutene-1, giving the refined crystal structures including even the positions of hydrogen atoms in some cases. O2 Binding and Dissociation and Ligand Exchange Reaction of O2 with CO in Polymer Composite Films of Hemoglobin

A polymer composite film of hemoglobin (Hb–polymer film) was prepared by the casting of an Hb–polymer mixed solution (weight ratio of Hb to polymer is 1 to 1). The percentages of O₂ and CO saturation of the Hb–dextran film were 46% and 70%, respectively. In the Hb solution, 100% saturation was observed for both ligands, and a humidified Hb–dextran film also showed 100% saturation. Water molecules would provide flexibility to the matrix polymer and promote a structural change in the Hb from a tense state (T) to a relaxed state (R). Thus the ligand binding to the Hb in the polymer films was strongly affected by the degree of interaction of Hb with the matrix polymers and the physical properties of the polymers. Inositol hexaphosphate (IHP) worked as an allosteric effector even in the solid polymer film and lowered the oxygen affinity of Hb. The O₂ transport through an Hb–polyethyleneimine (PEI) film with IHP showed the facilitated O₂ transport in comparison with the film without IHP because of the high dissociation rate of O₂ from Hb with IHP. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Ullmann CO coupling of sterically hindered secondary alcohols using excess amount of strongly coordinating monodentate ligands

A new effective copper catalyzed CO coupling reaction using excess amount of strongly coordinating monodentate ligands was successfully developed. Among the DMAP-type monodentate ligands, 4-pyrrolidinopyridine afforded the best results. The developed reaction is widely applicable for the synthesis of various hindered or acyclic secondary alkyl-aryl ethers. In this study, a novel and remarkable acceleration of the coupling reaction using excess amount of monodentate ligands was discovered.     

Synthesis of the Carbohydrate Moiety of Glycoproteins from the Parasite Echinococcus granulosus and Their Antigenicity against Human Sera

Stereocontrolled syntheses of biotin-labeled oligosaccharide portions containing the carbohydrate moiety of glycoprotein from Echinococcus granulosus have been accomplished. Trisaccharide Galβ1-3Galβ1-3GalNAcα1-R (A), tetrasaccharide Galα1-4Galβ1-3Galβ1-3GalNAcα1-R (B), and pentasaccharide Galα1-4Galβ1-3Galβ1-3Galβ1-3GalNAcα1-R (C), (R = biotinylated probe) were synthesized by stepwise condensation and/or block synthesis by the use of 5-(methoxycarbonyl)pentyl 2-azido-4,6-O-benzylidene-2-deoxy-α-d-galactopyranoside as a common glycosyl acceptor. The synthesis of the tetrasaccharide and the pentasaccharide was improved from the viewpoint of reducing the number of synthetic steps and increasing the total yield by changing from stepwise condensation to block synthesis. Moreover, hexasaccharide E, which contains the oligosaccharide sequence which occurs in E. granulosus, was synthesized from trisaccharide D. We examined the antigenicity of these five oligosaccharides by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Although compounds of C–E did not exhibit antigenicity against cystic echinococcosis (CE) patient sera, compounds B, D, and E showed good serodiagnostic potential for alveolar echinococcosis (AE).

A new class of fullerene sensors based on calix[5]arenes has produced the highly sensitive detection of C60 and C70.     

Memory effect on the glass transition in vulcanized rubber

The memory effect upon glassification is studied in the glass-to-rubber transition of vulcanized rubber with the strain as a controlling parameter. A phenomenological model is proposed, taking the history of the temperature and the strain into account, by which the experimental results are interpreted. The data and the model demonstrate that the glassy state memorizes the time course of strain upon glassification, not as a single parameter but as the history itself. The data also show that the effect of irreversible deformation in the glassy state is beyond the scope of the present model.
