Possible one-dimensional 3He quantum fluid formed in nanopores

Heat capacity measurements have been made down to 5 mK for 3He fluid films adsorbed in one-dimensional (1D) nanometer-scale pores, 28 A in diameter, preplated with 4He of 1.47 atomic layers. At low 3He density, the heat capacity shows a density-dependent, Schottky-like peak near 150 mK asymptoting to the value corresponding to a 2D Boltzmann gas at high temperatures. The peak behavior is attributed to the crossover from a 2D gas to a 1D state at low temperatures. The degenerate state of the 1D 3He fluid is indicated by a predominantly linear temperature dependence below about 30 mK.     

Skeletal reorganization of enynes into 1-vinylcycloalkenes in ionic liquids

The skeletal reorganization of enynes catalyzed by transition metal chlorides, such as PtCl(2), [RuCl(2)(CO)(3)](2), [RhCl(CO)(2)](2), and AuCl(3), in ionic liquids proceeds under milder conditions (at lower reaction temperatures and for shorter reaction times) than those needed for ordinary solvents. The products produced by the skeletal reorganization of enynes were easily removed from the catalyst by a simple extraction with Et(2)O or distillation. The PtCl(2) can be reused up to five times.     

Age-dependent plasticity in the superior temporal sulcus in deaf humans: a functional MRI study

Background  

Sign-language comprehension activates the auditory cortex in deaf subjects. It is not known whether this functional plasticity in the temporal cortex is age dependent. We conducted functional magnetic-resonance imaging in six deaf signers who lost their hearing before the age of 2 years, five deaf signers who were >5 years of age at the time of hearing loss and six signers with normal hearing. The task was sentence comprehension in Japanese sign language.     

A direct electrochemical route to construct a polymer/manganese oxide layered structure

A layered nanocomposite with poly(diallyldimethylammonium), PDDA, intercalated between manganese oxide layers can be formed on a platinum electrode in a thin film form through a direct electrochemical route. The process involves a potentiostatic oxidation of aqueous Mn(2+) precursors in the presence of PDDA by applying a constant potential (+1.0 V vs Ag/AgCl).     

Periodic change of viscosity and density in an oscillating chemical reaction

It was found that the periodic change of the solution viscosity and density was generated in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. This rhythmic phenomenon was observed in both the iron catalyst [[Fe(Phen)(3)](2+)-[Fe(Phen)(3)](3+)] and the cerium catalyst [Ce(III)-Ce(IV)] system, where the solution viscosity and density were synchronized with the redox potential in the in-phase mode. However, the time delay existed between the redox potential and the solution viscosity and density. The behavior of the BZ reaction was also monitored in the presence of the nonionic surfactant. This experiment revealed that, beyond the critical micelle concentration, the phase between the redox potential and the solution viscosity and density was synchronized into the antiphase mode. We suggested that the variation of the catalyst drove the oscillation of the solution viscosity and density in the BZ reaction.     

The first samarium(II)-mediated aryl radical cyclisation onto an aromatic ring

Intramolecular arylation of aryl radicals was mediated by SmI(2)/HMPA in the presence of i-PrOH to give spirocycles and/or reduced cine-cyclised products, while the reaction in the absence of i-PrOH gave the rearomatised fused rings.     

Iodine atom transfer [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction with electron-rich alkenes using N-tosyliodoaziridine derivatives as novel azahomoallyl radical precursors

Treatment of N-tosyliodoaziridine derivatives with Et(3)B efficiently produces various azahomoallyl radical (2-akenylamidyl radical) species which give oxygen-functionalized pyrrolidine derivatives through iodine atom transfer [3 + 2] cycloaddition with electron-rich alkenes such as enol ethers and ketene acetal. The present cycloaddition reaction proceeds regioselectively via C-N bond cleavage of an aziridinylalkyl radical intermediate and addition of the resulting azahomoallyl radicals to the terminal carbon of an alkene. The reaction of alkenes with the cyclohexenylamidyl radical generated from an optically active bicyclic iodoaziridine [(1S,2S,6S)-2-iodo-7-(p-toluenesulfonyl)-7-azabicyclo[4.1.0]heptane, 94% ee] also proceeds to give optically active octahydroindole derivatives (84-93% ee).     

Krafft temperature and enthalpy of solution of<Emphasis Type="Italic"> N</Emphasis>-acyl amino acid surfactants and their racemic modifications: effect of the counter ion

The Krafft temperatures and enthalpies of solution of N-hexadecanoyl alaninate and valinate, and N-tetradecanoyl phenylalaninate were obtained from differential scanning calorimetry. The Krafft temperature of N-acyl amino acid surfactant increased with decreasing size of the counter ion, with some exceptions. The enthalpy of solution was endothermic and increased with decreasing size of the counter ion except for the cases of lithium salt. The results showed that the L-L interaction in the solid state of N-hexadecanoyl amino acid surfactant salt was superior to the D-L interaction for both the alanine and valine systems when the counter ion size increased. However, the D-L interaction was still advantageous for the phenylalanine system with Cs⁺ as a counter ion. Both Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy studies and theoretical calculations suggested that the difference in magnitudes of the interactions between peptide and counter ion was a dominant factor for the chiral effect.     

Fluorescence detection of guanine-adenine transition by a hydrogen bond forming small compound

In combination with abasic site-containing oligodeoxynucleotides, 2-amino-4-oxopteridine (pterin) can selectively recognize guanine base over other nucleobases accompanied by fluorescence quenching, which allows clear detection of a guanine-adenine transition with the naked eye.
