New Plasmon Waveguides Composed of Twin Metal Wedges with a Nano Gap

We have numerically shown the existence of coupled wedge plasmons (CWPs) which propagates along a nano gap of a twin metal wedge. The CWPs are formed by wedge plasmons which can interact with each other. The dispersion relations of the wavenumber, propagation distance, and beam area of CWPs, are described and show that the characteristics of CWPs are similar to those of wedge plasmons and of gap plasmons. We also propose a new plasmon waveguide composed of twin metal wedges with a nano gap.     

An LMI approach to decentralized guaranteed cost control for a class of uncertain nonlinear large-scale delay systems

The guaranteed cost control problem via the decentralized robust control for nonlinear uncertain large-scale systems that have delay in both state and control input is considered. Sufficient conditions for the existence of guaranteed cost controllers are given in terms of linear matrix inequality (LMI). It is shown that the decentralized local state feedback controllers can be obtained by solving the LMI.     

Spacetime correlation functions of dynamic speckles produced by a series of moving phase screens

Spacetime correlation functions of the time-varying speckle intensity have been evaluated for the case where speckle patterns are produced in the Fresnel diffraction region by light propagating through a series of moving random-phase screens. The correlation functions are given by a set of recursion formulae which are useful for numerical computations. Three statistical quantities relating to the motion of speckle patterns are derived to examine the relationship between the velocity distribution of the phase screens and the temporal behaviour of resultant speckle patterns. It is found that the velocity differences between the phase screens have a strong effect on both the decorrelation of speckle patterns and the fluctuating speed of the speckle intensity.     

Design of a widely tunable laser with a chirped ladder filter

We theoretically investigated a digitally tunable laser with a chirped ladder filter and a ring resonator to obtain a wide wavelength tuning range covering the whole C- or L- band. The clear relation between the tuning range and laser structure, especially the ladder filter, is described analytically. The introduction of a chirped structure into a ladder filter is effective in achieving both wide tunability and a stable lasing mode. A numerical simulation based on multimode rate equations shows that a tuning range of over 40 nm and a mode suppression ratio over 40 dB can be achieved by introducing a chirped ladder filter.     

Fast Optical Switching Using Oriented Cyanine Dye-Doped Nematic Liquid Crystal

A cyanine dye, 2-[7-（1,3-dihydro-1,3,3-trimethyl-2H-indol-2-ylidene）-1,3,5-heptatrienyl]-1,3,3-trimethyl-3H-indolium iodide （NK-125）, is doped in 4-cyano-4＇-pentylbiphenyl （5 CB）, and the mixture is sandwiched between two pieces of rubbed glass plates. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of the oriented NK-125-SCB layers are measured by the resonant femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing （DFWM） technique at 760 nm. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of one of the present samples is 5.5×10^-8 esu. The slow DFWM response of the NK-125-SCB layers due to a population grating is accelerated by the increasing laser power because of amplified spontaneous emission （ASE）. On the other hand, we do not observe a similar phenomenon for NK-125- polyethylene glycol （PEG-400）. Oriented NK-125 molecules in nematic liquid crystals must have very high ASE efficiency. Hence the population grating in a DFWM signal disappears within about 4 ps. It is expected that NK-125-SCB can be used as a material for very fast all-optical switching.     

Primary dependence of 7-aryl-2,5-di-t-butyl-1,3,5-cycloheptatriene valence tautomerism on the π-acceptor strength of the 7-aryl substituent

¹³C NMR studies showed that the population of the norcaradiene form of the title systems containing p-CH₃O, H, and p-CF₃ on the 7-aryl group increases in this order. The result is consistent with the prediction from the π-acceptor strength of the aryl group estimated by INDO calculations.     

Multiderivations of Coxeter arrangements

Let V be an ℓ-dimensional Euclidean space. Let G⊂O(V) be a finite irreducible orthogonal reflection group. Let ? be the corresponding Coxeter arrangement. Let S be the algebra of polynomial functions on V. For H∈? choose α _H ∈V ^* such that H=ker(α _H ). For each nonnegative integer m, define the derivation module D ^(m) (?)={θ∈Der _S |θ(α _H )∈Sα ^m _H }. The module is known to be a free S-module of rank ℓ by K. Saito (1975) for m=1 and L. Solomon-H. Terao (1998) for m=2. The main result of this paper is that this is the case for all m. Moreover we explicitly construct a basis for D ^(m) (?). Their degrees are all equal to mh/2 (when m is even) or are equal to ((m−1)h/2)+m _i (1≤i≤ℓ) (when m is odd). Here m ₁≤···≤m _ℓ are the exponents of G and h=m _ℓ+1 is the Coxeter number. The construction heavily uses the primitive derivation D which plays a central role in the theory of flat generators by K. Saito (or equivalently the Frobenius manifold structure for the orbit space of G). Some new results concerning the primitive derivation D are obtained in the course of proof of the main result. Synthesis of 3-hydroxyindolin-2-one alkaloids, (±)-donaxaridine and (±)-convolutamydines A and E, through enolization-Claisen rearrangement of 2-allyloxyindolin-3-ones

Claisen rearrangement triggered by enolization of 2-allyloxyindolin-3-ones with DBU was performed in order to prepare 3-allyl-3-hydroxyindolin-2-ones. Total synthesis of 3-hydroxyindolin-2-one alkaloids, (±)-donaxaridine, as well as (±)-convolutamydines A and E, was achieved by transformation of the allyl moiety of 3-allyl-3-hydroxyindolin-2-ones.
