Lattice thermal conductivity of superconducting Nb-Mo and Nb-Ta alloys below 1 K

The phonon scattering by dislocations is enhanced in Nb-Ta compared with Nb-Mo. The mass difference between Nb and Ta is indicated to be responsible for the enhancement.

Island dynamics in the large-helical-device plasmas

In the Large Helical Device plasma discharges, the size of an externally imposed island with mode number ( n/m = 1/1) decreases substantially when the plasma is collisionless ( nu(*)< approximately 1) and the beta is finite ( > approximately 0.1%) at the island location. For the collisional plasmas with finite beta, on the other hand, the size of the island increases. However, there is a threshold in terms of the vacuum island size below which the island enlargement is not seen.     

Nonlinear optical and XPS properties of Au and Ag nanometer-size particle-doped alumina films prepared by the sol–gel method

Au and Ag nanometer-size particle-doped alumina films were prepared by the aqueous sol–gel method. Their XPS and third-order nonlinear optical properties were examined. The XPS results gave evidence of an interaction between Au and alumina. Third-order susceptibilities, χ⁽³⁾ and χ⁽³⁾/ obtained by degenerate four-wave mixing method were in the order of 10⁻⁸ esu and 10⁻¹⁰ esu.cm for doped films, respectively.     

Magnetic Hyperfine Fields of 151PmFe and 147NdNi

Low-temperature nuclear orientation (LTNO) experiments were performed on ¹⁵¹Pm implanted into iron and ¹⁴⁷Nd implanted into nickel. The γ-ray anisotropy measurements yielded values of the magnetic hyperfine field and the substitutional fractions of these ions in the host metals. An observed discrepancy between the substitutional fractions obtained from the 91 keV and 531 keV data on ¹⁴⁷NdNi is briefly discussed. Synthesis and Application of Tetrahydro‐2H‐fluorenes by a Pd(0)‐Catalyzed Benzylic C(sp3)−H Functionalization

A new method has been developed for the synthesis of tetrahydro‐2H‐fluorenes based on a Pd(0)‐catalyzed benzylic C(sp³)?H functionalization. Importantly, the success of the cyclization step was dependent on there being substituents at the two positions ortho to the benzylic group to avoid an undesired C(sp²)?H functionalization. This method was subsequently used to prepare the right‐hand fragment of the hexacyclic triterpenoid benzohopanes, and therefore represents a powerful tool for the construction of the related compounds.
