STN-gels in fast passive matrix displays

Liquid crystalline physical gels have been prepared in a super twisted nematic configuration. These gels show a remarkable increase in switching speed from the in field to out of field relaxation. We explore whether these gels might be used in fast passive matrix displays.     

Adiabatic waves along interfacial layers near the critical pointOndes adiabatiques le long des interfaces près du point critique

Near the critical point, isothermal interfacial zones are investigated starting from a non-local density of energy. From the equations of motion of thermocapillary fluids, we point out a new kind of adiabatic waves propagating along the interfacial layers. The waves are associated with the second derivatives of densities and propagate with a celerity depending on the proximity of the critical point. To cite this article: H. Gouin, C. R. Symmetric homotopy construction

Homotopy continuation methods can be applied to compute all finite solutions to a given polynomial system. Computations will be performed more efficiently if the symmetric structure of the system can be exploited. This paper presents the construction of a symmetric homotopy. Using this homotopy, only the paths according to the generating solutions have to be traced during continuation.     

Some recent and new results on the maximum entropy distribution

This letter concerns the maximum entropy (ME) distribution proposed by Theil and Laitinen (1980); it summarizes some of the results obtained with this distribution and its explores the conditioning of the ME covariance matrix as the number of variables increases.

Four icosahedra can meet at a point

What is the maximal number of nonoverlapping copies of a regular polyhedron ∏ that can share a common vertex? The answer is shown to be 4 if ∏ is an icosahedron or dodecahedron, and is conjectured to be 7 for an octahedron and 20 for a tetrahedron. (For a cube the answer is trivially 8.)     

Simultaneous production of K1o (892) and Δ++(1236) in the reaction K+p→K+π+π−p from 4.3 to 5.0 GeV/c

The reaction $\text{K}{}^{\mathrm{+}}\text{d}\text{→}\text{K}{}^{\mathrm{1o}}\text{(892) Δ}{}^{\mathrm{++}}\text{(1236)}\text{n}{}_{\mathrm{s}}$ from a K⁺d experiment with the CERN 2 m bubble chamber at 4.6 GeV/c is compared with the reaction $\text{K}{}^{\mathrm{+}}\text{p}\text{→}\text{K}{}^{\mathrm{1o}}\text{(892)Δ}{}^{\mathrm{++}}\text{(1236)}$ from a K⁺p experiment at the same energy. In addition, predictions of an absorption model, a Regge pole model and a quark model for the production and decay characteristics of the reaction $\text{K}{}^{\mathrm{+}}\text{p}\text{→}\text{K}{}^{\mathrm{1o}}\text{(892)Δ}{}^{\mathrm{++}}\text{(1236)}$ are tested with the combined statistics of the K⁺d experiment and three K⁺p experiments between 4.3 and 5.0 GeV/c.
