Chemical Bonding in Polarised Push–Pull Ethylenes

1,1‐Diamino‐2,2‐bis(triflyl)ethylenes with both twisted and planar structures around the partial “C=C” bond were synthesised. Bonding properties in these compounds were analysed by an experimental approach using high‐resolution X‐ray diffraction data treated with X‐ray wavefunction refinement (XWR). In the twisted compound, a dominant contribution of the charge‐separated resonance structure was revealed. On the contrary, the nearly planar compound still showed π‐bonding character, however, with a considerable contribution of the charge‐separated resonance structure.     

Dark-spot formation by vector beams

Dark-spot formation is demonstrated by calculating electric-field distribution near the focus produced by focusing higher-order transverse-mode vector beams with radial and azimuthal polarizations in addition to Laguerre-Gaussian beams with linear and circular polarizations. The size of the dark spot in the radial direction varies from one beam to another, but the size in the axial direction is almost the same. The radially polarized TM02-mode beam is predicted to form a dark spot solely by an axial electric field.     

Prospective trial of a navigator setting under left hepatic lobe on magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography using a free-breathing prospective acquisition correction technique

PURPOSE: To prospectively compare the image acquisition time and image quality obtained by navigator setting under the left hepatic lobe vs. on the right diaphragm on magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) using a free-breathing navigator-triggered prospective acquisition correction technique (PACE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty consecutive patients prospectively underwent three-dimensional T2-weighted turbo spin-echo MRCP using PACE with the navigator randomly set either under the left hepatic lobe or on top of the right diaphragm. Image acquisition time and subjective image quality were compared on a five-point scale using Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney's U test, respectively. RESULTS: There was no significant difference for mean acquisition time (6.1+/-1.6 vs. 6.3+/-1.2 min, P=.689) between the left hepatic lobe group and right diaphragm group. Mean subjective image quality was significantly worse in the left hepatic lobe group than in the right diaphragm group (4.1 vs. 4.7, P=.044). CONCLUSION: Setting the navigator under the left hepatic lobe for MRCP using PACE causes the data processing to be more difficult. As well, under current circumstances, it does not contribute to reducing acquisition time or improving the image quality.     

Liquid-phase epitaxy of ZnSe from Zn-Ga solution

Undoped or Ga doped ZnSe single crystal layers with thicknesses between 3 and 13 μm were grown on ZnS_xSe_1?x (0 ? x ? 1) single crystal substrates by liquid phase epitaxy in a sealed tube system from a Zn or Zn-Ga alloy solution. Smooth and uniform epitaxial layers with high crystal perfection were obtained on the (111)- and (100)-oriented substrates. All the epitaxial layers were n-type and highly conductive (0.1 < ? < 10 Ω cm). A remarkable enhancement of the blue part of the photoluminescence spectra at room temperature was observed for the epitaxial layers grown from the Zn-Ga alloy solution.     

New cytotoxic bicyclic hexapeptides, RA-XXIII and RA-XXIV, from Rubia cordifolia L

Two new bicyclic hexapeptides, RA-XXIII and RA-XXIV, were isolated from the roots of Rubia cordifolia L. (Rubiaceae). Their structures were determined by the analysis of their 2D NMR spectra, chemical methods, and X-ray crystallography. The IC50 values of RA-XXIII and RA-XXIV against P-388 leukemia cells were 0.16 and 0.48 microg/ml, respectively.     

A strategy for the synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted indoles starting from N-(o-halophenyl)allenamides

A strategy for the synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted indole derivatives based on an intramolecular carbopalladation-anion capture cascade has been developed, wherein construction of the pyrrole ring and functionalisation of the indole C2 and C3 positions were achieved by extensive use of palladium(0)-catalysed coupling reactions.
