Relaxation effects in the quantification of fat using gradient echo imaging

Quantification of fat has been investigated using images acquired from multiple gradient echoes. The evolution of the signal with echo time and flip angle was measured in phantoms of known fat and water composition and in 21 research subjects with fatty liver. Data were compared to different models of the signal equation, in which each model makes different assumptions about the T1 and/or T2* relaxation effects. A range of T1, T2*, fat fraction and number of echoes was investigated to cover situations of relevance to clinical imaging. Results indicate that quantification is most accurate at low flip angles (to minimize T1 effects) with a small number of echoes (to minimize spectral broadening effects). At short echo times, the spectral broadening effects manifest as a short apparent T2 for the fat component.     

Sobralene,a new sex-aggregation pheromone and likely shunt metabolite of the taxadiene synthase cascade,produced by a member of the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis species complex

A new sex-aggregation pheromone, sobralene, produced by the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis from Sobral (Ceará State, Brazil) is shown to have the novel 6,12-membered ring-fused diterpene structure 3. It is proposed that sobralene is a likely shunt metabolite of the taxadiene synthase-catalysed cyclisation of geranygeranyl diphosphate.     

Synthesis and characterization of a photoaffinity labelling probe based on the structure of the cystic fibrosis drug ivacaftor

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder caused by loss-of-function mutations to the gene encoding the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. Ivacaftor (1) was the first therapeutic approved for the treatment of CF that is able to restore gating activity to certain CFTR variants although the mechanism of action is poorly understood. Herein we describe the synthesis of a photoaffinity labelling (PAL) probe (2) based on the structure of ivacaftor incorporating a photoreactive diazirine moiety for use in labelling studies designed to identify the binding site for ivacaftor on mutant CFTR. The PAL probe 2 retained potentiation activity, with a potency similar to 1, using a Fluorescent Imaging Plate Reader (FLIPR^®) assay measuring ion conductance potentiation of wild type (Wt)-CFTR. Photolabelling experiments with human serum albumin (HSA) as a model protein have shown that probe 2 can label HSA in a manner consistent with observed and predicted binding.     

Stages of chaotic synchronization

In an experimental investigation of the response of a chaotic system to a chaotic driving force, we have observed synchronization of chaos of the response system in the forms of generalized synchronization, phase synchronization, and lag synchronization to the driving signal. In this paper we compare the features of these forms of synchronized chaos and study their relations and physical origins. We found that different forms of chaotic synchronization could be interpreted as different stages of nonlinear interaction between the coupled chaotic systems. (c) 1998 American Institute of Physics.
