Molecular weight fractionation for the study of complex biodegradation processes

Simulated synthetic sewage was treated in a laboratory-scale, completely mixed, activated sludge plant. Careful control of flow, loading and sludge recycle allowed the plant to be maintained in an essentially steady-state condition for extended periods. “Lumped parameter” determinations were done to assess the plant operating performance in conventional terms. For comparison, more sophisticated determinations were also applied: molecular weight fractionation, amino acids, ammonium-, nitrate- and nitrite-nitrogen, and carbon and nitrogen in the biomass (sludge). Molecular weight fractionation allowed a better characterization of dissolved carbonaceous pollutants. Samples were initially concentrated by low-temperature vacuum evaporation, followed by fractionation by low-pressure gel chromatography. The results demonstrate the value of this method in establishing the fate of complex carbonaceous pollutants present in the feed to biotreaters and in indicating the residual carbonaceous pollutants in the discharge.     

Logarithmic corrections to finite-size scaling in the four-state Potts model

The leading corrections to finite-size scaling predictions for eigenvalues of the quantum Hamiltonian limit of the critical four-state Potts model are calculated analytically from the Bethe ansatz equations for equivalent eigenstates of a modifiedXXZ chain. Scaled gaps are found to behave for large chain lengthL asx+dL+0[(lnL)^–1], wherex is the anomalous dimension of the associated primary scaling operator. For the gaps associated with the energy and magnetic operators, the values of the amplitudesd are in agreement with predictions of conformai invariance. The implications of these analytical results for the extrapolation of finite lattice data are discussed. Accurate estimates of x andd are found to be extremely difficult even with data available from large lattices,L500.     

The synthesis and some reactions of 2,3-substituted 1-phenylbenzo[f]quinoline

A series of 2,3-substituted 1-phenylbenzo[f]quinolines was synthesized by the Friedlander condensation of 1-benzoyl-2-naphthylamine with β-keto esters. Some chemical transformations of these compounds and the preparation of 13H-benzo[f]indeno[2,1-c]quinoline-13-one and its 9-methyl derivative are described.

An update on the electrolytic conductivity values for the primary standard KCl solutions: Conversion to the ITS-90 temperature scale

A new international temperature scale has replaced the 1968 scale. Here, we report the changes required in our previous results for primary conductivity standards for 0.01, 0.1 and 1.0 Demal KCl solutions at 0,18 and 25°C.     

The classical collision induced light absorption coefficient for inert gas systems

The collision induced light absorption for a model proposed by Levine and Birnbaum and extended by Weiss is calculated by linear response theory and is shown to be equivalent to their Kirchhoff law treatment. It is also demonstrated that this result is the classical limit of the quantum mechanical expression.
