Coupling polymerization initiators to molecular recognition events provide the ability to amplify these events and detect them using the formation of a cross‐linked polymer as an inexpensive readout that is visible to the unaided eye. The eosin‐tertiary amine co‐initiation system, activated by visible light, has proven utility in this context when an average of three eosin molecules are coupled to a protein detection reagent. The present work addresses the question of how detection sensitivity is impacted when the number of eosin molecules per binding event increases in the range of two to fifteen. Unlike in other initiation systems, a non‐monotonic relationship is observed between the number of initiators per binding event and the observed detection sensitivity.

This article describes a class of graphs, embedded plots, that are particularly useful for analyzing large and complex datasets. Embedded plots organize a collection of graphs into a larger graphic, which can display more complex relationships than would otherwise be possible. This arrangement provides additional axes, prevents overplotting, and allows for multiple levels of visual summarization. Embedded plots also preprocess complex data into a form suitable for the human cognitive system, which can facilitate comprehension. We illustrate the usefulness of embedded plots with a case study, discuss the practical and cognitive advantages of embedded plots, and demonstrate how to implement embedded plots as a general class within visualization software, something currently unavailable. A practical investigation of frictional heating effects in conventional C18 columns was undertaken, to investigate whether problems found for sub-2 μm columns were also present for those of particle size 3 μm and 5 μm and different internal diameter. The influence of a water bath, a still air heater, and a forced air heater on performance was investigated. Heating effects were substantial, with a decrease in k of almost 15% for toluene over the flow rate range ∼0.4–2.3 mL/min with a 15 cm × 0.46 cm ID column packed with 3 μm particles. Heating effects on retention increased with increasing solute k, with increase in the column ID, with decrease in the column particle size, and with decrease in the set column oven temperature. While the water bath minimised axial temperature gradients and thus its effect on k, radial temperature gradients were potentially serious with this system, especially at high mobile phase velocity, even with columns containing 5 μm particles. In contrast to the effects of axial temperature gradients in 4.6 mm columns, very little difference in Van Deemter plots was noted between the three different thermostats with 2 mm ID columns, even when 3 μm particles were used. However, the efficiency of 2 mm columns for peaks of low or moderate k (k < 4) can be compromised by the extra dead volume introduced by the heating systems, even with conventional HPLC systems with otherwise minimised extra column volume.  相似文献

The single-copy entanglement of a given many-body quantum system is defined [J. Eisert and M. Cramer, Phys. Rev. A 72, 042112 (2005)10.1103/PhysRevA.72.042112] as the maximal entanglement deterministically distillable from a bipartition of a single specimen of that system. For critical (gapless) spin chains, it was recently shown that this is exactly half the von Neumann entropy [R. Orús, J. I. Latorre, J. Eisert, and M. Cramer, Phys. Rev. A 73, 060303(R) (2006)], itself defined as the entanglement distillable in the asymptotic limit-i.e., given an infinite number of copies of the system. It is an open question as to what the equivalent behavior for gapped systems is. In this Letter, I show that for the paradigmatic spin-S Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki chain (the archetypal gapped chain), the single-copy entanglement is equal to the von Neumann entropy; i.e., all the entanglement present may be distilled from a single specimen.  相似文献

The choice of appropriate MR pulse sequences to highlight a particular pathology to best advantage is not always straightforward. In this study of intracranial haemorrhage, tissue relaxation times measured in vitro were entered into a computer program which calculated the signal intensity of each tissue (brain, blood, CSF, and bloody CSF) for all possible echo (TE) and repeat (TR) times. Analysis of graph plots of the results enabled the selection of pulse sequences which gave optimal separation of the signal intensities of intracranial haemorrhage from those of normal intracranial contents. The sequences thus chosen were used successfully in the imaging of patients with intracranial haemorrhage.  相似文献

Recently, it was reported that crystals of the organic material dithiophene-tetrathiafulvalene (DT-TTF) have a high field-effect charge carrier mobility of 1.4 cm(2)/(V x s). These crystals were formed by a simple drop-casting method, making this material interesting to investigate for possible applications in low-cost electronics. Here, organic single-crystal field-effect transistors based on materials related to DT-TTF are presented and a clear correlation between the crystal structure and the electrical characteristics is observed. The observed relationship between the mobilities in the different crystal structures is strongly corroborated by calculations of both the molecular reorganization energies and the maximum intermolecular transfer integrals. The most suitable materials described here exhibit mobilities that are among the highest reported for organic field-effect transistors and that are the highest reported for solution-processed materials.  相似文献
