Addendum to "On the L1-Condition Number of the Univariate Bernstein Basis"

The paper mentioned above is a contribution of the authors to Volume 18 (2002) of this journal, see . Recently, J. Domsta pointed out to us that the proof of Theorem 4.2 in that paper contains an error. The purpose of this addendum is to present a correct argument for it.     

Isotopic families of contact manifolds for elliptic PDE

A test for a function to be a solution of an elliptic PDE is given in terms of extensions, as solutions, from the boundaries inside the domains belonging to an isotopic family. It generalizes a result of Ehrenpreis for spheres moved along a straight line.

     

Scaled-oscillation and regularity

We give sufficient conditions for Sobolev and Lipschitz functions in terms of their lower scaled-oscillation. The sharpness of these conditions is shown by examples. Our examples also show that a Stepanov-type differentiability theorem does not hold under the boundedness assumption of the lower scaled-oscillation.

     

Analysis of packing factors of crystalline polymers in terms of the glass transition to melting temperature radio

An expression for the ratio of the glass transition temperature to the melting temperature, T _g/T _m, was derived with allowance for fluctuations of the packing factor in the amorphous state. This relationship made it possible to describe the actual range of variation in T _g/T _m depending on a change in the packing factor in the crystalline state k _{o, cr}. The proposed approach forms the basis for the method of determination of increments in the packing ratio k _{o, cr} and formulation of the principles of selection of experimental data for calculations. The glass transition temperatures in polyethylene depending on the type of unit cell were calculated.     

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN STUDIES OF AN 84 GHz, 500 kW, CW GYROTRON

The feasibility of an 84 GHz, 500 kW, CW gyrotron for ECRH on an experimental tokamak will be presented in this paper. Mode competition and mode selection procedures are carefully investigated by considering various candidate modes and the TE_10,4 mode is chosen as the operating mode. A conventional cylindrical cavity resonator with weak input and output tapers and parabolic roundings is considered for interaction studies. Self-consistent, both single mode and time-dependent, calculations are carried out and power and efficiencies are computed for a typical set of beam parameters. The results show that an output power of well over 500 kW, CW and efficiency around 40% can be reached without a depressed collector.     

Duality for Finite Hopf Algebras Explained by Corings

We give a coring version for the duality theorem for actions and coactions of a finitely generated projective Hopf algebra. We also provide a coring analogue for a theorem of H.-J. Schneider, which generalizes and unifies the duality theorem for finite Hopf algebras and its refinements. This paper was written while the first author visited the Mathematics Departments of Syracuse University and California State University Dominguez Hills. He would like to thank both departments for their hospitality.     

Energy relaxation of hot carriers in single-wall carbon nanotubes by surface optical phonons of the substrate

A new mechanism is proposed for the energy relaxation of hot carriers in single-wall carbon nanotubes: scattering with the emission of surface optical phonons into the semiconductor substrate. The theory involves intrasubband and intersubband forward and backward scattering. The analytical result and numerical data indicate that intrasubband forward scattering is the main process: the corresponding lifetime comprises several femtoseconds for a quartz substrate, which allows this mechanism of energy relaxation to be considered dominating for a nanotube on the surface of a polar semiconductor or a dielectric.     

Experimental intensity patterns obtained from a 2D shearing interferometer with adaptable sensitivity

The interferometric intensity patterns from a 2D shearing interferometer are shown and discussed. The intensity patterns can be obtained in two different approaches incorporating differential and extended wavefront controlled displacements. The reliable directional sensitivity of this interferometer allows the optimization of the measurement parameters to estimate the wavefront of the intensity patterns by regularization techniques.     

Diamagnetic susceptibility of hydrogenic donor impurity in low-dimensional semiconducting systems

The binding energies of a hydrogenic donor both in the parabolic and non-parabolic conduction band model within the effective mass approximation have been computed for the low-dimensional semiconducting systems (LDSS) like quantum well, quantum well wire and quantum dot taking GaAs/Al_xGa_1−xAs systems as an example. It is observed that the effect of non-parabolicity is not effective when the system goes to lower dimensionality. The diamagnetic susceptibility of a hydrogenic donor impurity has also been computed in these LDSS in the infinite barrier model. Since no theoretical or experimental works on the diamagnetic susceptibility of LDSS are available in the literature, as a realistic case the diamagnetic susceptibility has been computed in the finite barrier model (x=0.3) for a quantum well and the results are discussed in the light of semiconductor-metal transition.
