Based on helium atom beam diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy data, the coexistence of a meandering and a bunching instability during homoepitaxial step flow growth is established in a class of nonreconstructed, metallic vicinal surfaces, Cu (1,1,n), n=5,9,17. Specifically, the meandering instability is shown to act as a precursor to the bunching instability, indicating that a one-dimensional treatment of bunching in step flow growth is not sufficient. Our findings might be generic to step flow growth in kinetically restricted systems.  相似文献

Electron channeling experiments performed on individually scanned, single columns of atoms show that in highly n-type Si grown at low temperatures the primary electrically deactivating defect cannot belong to either the widely accepted class of donor-vacancy clusters or a recently proposed class of donor pairs. First-principles calculations suggest a new class of defects consisting of two dopant donor atoms near a displaced Si atom, which forms a vacancy-interstitial pair. These complexes are consistent with the present experimental results, the measured open volume of the defects, the observed electrical activity as a function of dopant concentration, and the enhanced diffusion of impurities in the presence of deactivated dopants.  相似文献

We report a comparative study of (63)Cu nuclear magnetic resonance spin lattice relaxation rates T(1)(-1) on undoped SrCuO(2) and Ca-doped Sr(0.9)Ca(0.1)CuO(2) spin chain compounds. A temperature independent T(1)(-1) is observed for SrCuO(2) as expected for an S=1/2 Heisenberg chain. Surprisingly, we observe an exponential decrease of T(1)(-1) for T<90 K in the Ca-doped sample evidencing the opening of a spin gap. The data analysis within the J(1)-J(2) Heisenberg model employing density-matrix renormalization group calculations suggests an impurity driven small alternation of the J(2)-exchange coupling as a possible cause of the spin gap.  相似文献

We investigated the magnetic nature of Fe(1/4)TaS2 using x-ray absorption spectroscopy, photoemission spectroscopy, and first principles band calculations. The results show a large unquenched orbital magnetic moment (~1.0 μ(B)/Fe) at intercalated Fe sites, resulting in a gigantic magnetic anisotropy (H(A)?60 T). The magnetic coupling is well understood in terms of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction, suggesting a novel RKKY ferromagnet with Ising-type spin states. We also found that this indirect exchange coupling between the neighboring Fe spins is ferromagnetic and maximized at the Fe-Fe distance of 2×2 superstructure.  相似文献

The heat of adsorption and sticking probability of CO on well-defined Pd nanoparticles were measured as a function of particle size using single crystal adsorption microcalorimetry. Pd particles of different average sizes ranging from 120 to 4900 atoms per particle (or from 1.8 to 8 nm) and Pd(111) were used that were supported on a model in situ grown Fe(3)O(4)/Pt(111) oxide film. To precisely quantify the adsorption energies, the reflectivities of the investigated model surfaces were measured as a function of the thickness of the Fe(3)O(4) oxide layer and the amount of deposited Pd. A substantial decrease of the binding energy of CO was found with decreasing particle size. Initial heat of adsorption obtained on the virtually adsorbate-free surface was observed to be reduced by about 20-40 kJ mol(-1) on the smallest 1.8 nm sized Pd particles as compared to the larger Pd clusters and the extended Pd(111) single crystal surface. This effect is discussed in terms of the size-dependent properties of the Pd nanoparticles. The CO adsorption kinetics indicates a strong enhancement of the adsorbate flux onto the metal particles due to a capture zone effect, which involves trapping of adsorbates on the support and diffusion to metal clusters. The CO adsorption rate was found to be enhanced by a factor of ~8 for the smallest 1.8 nm sized particles and by ~1.4 for the particles of 7-8 nm size.  相似文献

In the last years molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has become a very important method to create new materials. Scattering and channeling of high-energy ions is a mass-dispersive, surface-sensitive crystallographic technique, particularly suited for the investigation of epitaxial systems. The combination of both techniques allows new insight into some of the fundamental processes at interfaces and surfaces. As an example we discuss the influence of substrate reconstruction on epitaxial growth. We show for the Si/Ge and Si/Si systems that the reordering of the reconstruction-induced displacements at the substrate surface, a necessary condition for epitaxial growth, is critically dependent on the type of reconstruction: Deposition of Ge or Si on Si(100)2×1 at room-temperature relieves the reconstruction, whereas Si(111)7×7 appears unaffected. This difference is discussed in terms of structural models for these surfaces. We shall also discuss the implications of these results with respect to MBE and, in particular, to Si homoepitaxial temperatures.  相似文献

Changes of the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic Co particles deposited on the radical31 x radical31R +/- 9 degrees reconstructed alpha-Al2O3(0001) as well as on a thin alumina film grown on a NiAl(110) substrate were investigated as a function of thermal annealing. On the thin film changes of the magnetic response were found above 500 K which correlates with changes in the particle size distribution. Annealing to 870 K leads to a permeation of the metal though the oxide film which causes significant changes in the ferromagnetic resonance response. On the alpha-Al2O3 single crystal sintering of particles requires temperatures above 600 K being about 100 K higher as compared to the thin alumina film. For large clusters intraparticle redistribution takes place already below 600 K a phenomenon not observed for the small clusters. In addition, a significant dependence of the measured g values from the substrate as well as the thermal treatment is found which can be understood in terms of the structural properties of the systems.  相似文献

We resolve the remarkably sharp bound exciton transitions of highly enriched 28Si using a single-frequency laser and photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, as well as photocurrent spectroscopy. Well-resolved doublets in the spectrum of the 31P donor reflect the hyperfine coupling of the electronic and nuclear donor spins. The optical detection of the nuclear spin state, and selective pumping and ionization of donors in specific electronic and nuclear spin states, suggests a number of new possibilities which could be useful for the realization of silicon-based quantum computers.  相似文献

All-optical noninvasive control of a multisection semiconductor laser by means of time-delayed feedback from an external Fabry-Perot cavity is realized experimentally. A theoretical analysis, in both a generic model as well as a device-specific simulation, points out the role of the optical phase. Using phase-dependent feedback we demonstrate stabilization of the continuous-wave laser output and noninvasive suppression of intensity pulsations.  相似文献

An online GC–MS-system for automated monitoring of crude wastewater at a complex chemical production site is presented. The modular system is, in principal, based on commercial equipment, but utilizes a special, two-stage injector, which consists of a splitless vaporization chamber on top of a PTV injector filled with Tenax. This set-up enables direct injection of wastewater. Almost 140 volatile and semi-volatile compounds are calibrated down to 1 mg L−1, which is sufficient for analysis of the influent of the wastewater-treatment plant. Two instruments analyze alternately, every 20 min, and the instrument cycle time is 40 min. The quantitative results are transferred to a database which is connected to a process-control system. Depending on the nature and concentration of a compound, an alarm can be generated and the wastewater stream can be diverted into an “off spec tank” if necessary. The GC–MS-system operates quasi-continuously with a system availability >98%. Data quality is automatically controlled in each run and by daily analysis of a quality-control sample. The development of a novel stacked PTV–PTV injector design to expand the range of analytes to selected basic compounds is described.  相似文献
