The fluorite-related anion-excess structure of CeN0.222O0.667F1.333: Ordering of defect clusters

This investigation presents the preparation of CeN_0.222O_0.667F_1.333 by a solid-state reaction from a mixture of CeN:CeF₃:CeO₂ = 1:2:1.5 and its structural investigation. The samples were annealed at 900°C in platinum tubes for different times. The basic structure found by powder neutron diffraction is anion-excess fluorite-related. The unit cell is an orthorhombic distortion of the cubic fluorite cell and has the space group Abm2. The lattice constants are a = 577.71(2) pm, B = 572.76(5) pm, and c = 573.32(6) pm. The structure refined by Rietveld analysis shows that [1:0:2]- defect clusters are present. In samples prepared by longer annealing times an ordering of these clusters to larger aggregates, i.e., toward the vernier phases, was observed. This was deduced from full profile analysis without refining a structural model by comparing the instrumental resolution curves of several models.     

Studies of the kinetics of the reduction of chromate by glutathione and related thiols

The reduction of chromate by glutathione, its mono- and diethyl esters, -cysteine, 2-mercapto-propionic acid and mercapto-succinic acid has been studied. The empirical rate law k_obs = ab[Thiol]²/(1 + b[Thiol]) is obeyed by all of these thiols, at neutral pH. No evidence could be obtained for a first-order pathway in glutathione under these conditions. These observations are used to comment on the stability of intermediates potentially important in explaining chromate toxicity.

Efficacy of the accent method of voice therapy

The management of voice disorders may follow one of four approaches: surgical, pharmacological, technical aid, and/or voice therapy. The latter approach offers a wide variety of techniques, each based on certain theoretical beliefs. One of these techniques is the Smith Accent Method. The principles and goals of the Accent Method are presented. The results of its application are discussed. This technique proved effective for cases of functional voice disorders, vocal nodules, and some degrees of vocal fold paralysis.     

Deposition of amorphous hydrogenated semiconductors by magnetron assisted silane decomposition

Magnetron assisted silane decomposition (MASD) is proposed as a method for deposition of a-Si:H and its alloys. In this method a silane containing gas mixture is passed through the magnetron plasma near a target and decomposed there. The deposition rate in the case of the c-Si target is increased 3 times compared to magnetron sputtering and film properties are changed. a-SiSn:H is obtained with a Sn target.     

A novel detection scheme for vibration monitoring using optical techniques

An all-fibre interferometer which allows the measurement of the movement (speed and distance) of a vibrating body is presented. An electronic signal processing scheme is used and this is contrasted with the measurement of velocity through an optical processing technique, which is however, more complex and expensive to implement. The overall simplicity of the electronic technique, the low cost of components and the use of an all-fibre arrangement make this an attractive system to implement where the more limited information available is sufficient for monitoring purposes.     

Dynamic behavior classification of a model for a continuous bio-reactor subject to product inhibition

The dynamic behavior of the continuous biological reactor subject to product inhibition is analysed and classified in terms of multiplicity and stability of steady states and existence and stability character of limit cycles. Various boundary conditions are derived which delineate the parameter space into regions of dynamically different behavior. The predicted types of behavior are then illustrated by numerical computation of cells and product concentration trajectories.     

快度中心区强子物质输运系数和粘滞流体演化

用Chapman-Enskog方法计算了相对论性重离子碰撞快度中心区产生的π介子物质的输运系数,并建立了相应的粘滞流体力学方程,进而讨论了粘滞对π介子物质演化过程的影响.结果表明,粘滞将减缓快度中心区π介子物质的冷却速度.     

An adaptive filter for gravitational-wave antennas

Summary We report on the development of an adaptive optimum filter for processing the data of a resonant bar gravitational-wave detector. This filter, based on the matched-filter theory, is adaptive in the sense that the function it realizes is derived from the actual noise spectrum of the data being analysed (instead from an idealized model of the noise). Its implementation is mostly based on frequency domain techniques. We also report on the application of the new filter to the data of the cryogenic antenna Explorer of the Rome group, with particular reference to the comparison between its performance and that of an otpimum filter with fixed values of the parameters.     

Path integrals over the group manifolds

Particle motion in the SU(2) manifold is quantized by path integrals. It is shown that the Poschl-Teller, Wood-Saxon, and Rosen-Morse potentials are solved by relating their propagators to the path integrations over the SU(2) manifold. Examples with some other groups are mentioned.
