Spectroscopy on very neutron-rich nuclei beyond N = 20

Recent studies on nuclear structure by using radioactive isotope beams available at the RIKEN projectile-fragment separator (RIPS) are introduced. Special emphasis is given to two selected experiments from recent programs that highlight studies on the magicity loss observed for very neutron-rich nuclei beyond N = 20 in the “island-of-inversion” region; the particle stability of ³¹F, and the low-lying excited states of ³⁴Mg. The radiative return at small angles: virtual corrections

Virtual corrections for electron-positron annihilation into one real and one off-shell photon of invariant mass are evaluated. Special attention is paid to those configurations where the real photon is collinear with the beam direction. This calculation is an important ingredient of a Monte Carlo program, which simulates events with tagged photons from initial-state radiation, including NLO corrections. Non-trivial simple poles at negative integers and mass concentration at singularity

Let (X,0) be the germ of a normal space of dimension n+1 and let f be the germ at 0 of a holomorphic function on X. Assume both X and f have an isolated singularity at 0. Denote by J the image of the restriction map , where F is the Milnor fibre of f at 0. We prove that the canonical Hermitian form on , given by poles of order at in the meromorphic extension of , passes to the quotient by J and is non-degenerate on . We show that any non-zero element in J produces a “mass concentration” at the singularity which is related to a simple pole concentrated at for (in a non-na?ve sense). A remark on the mild solutions of non-local evolution equations

We provide a counterexample to some recent publications concerning the existence of the mild solutions of the non-local evolution equations, and indicate that in the study of the non-local evolution equations, the operators from which the mild solutions may be derived are in general not compact, thus those fixed point theorems requiring the compactness of the operators are not applicable.     

Testing Extreme Value Conditions

A test statistic is developed that checks the validity of the extreme value conditions without specifiying the shape parameter of the limiting extreme value distribution.     

On the entropy of fusion

The asymptotic value of the melting entropy, i.e. ΔS_f = R ln 2 for vanishing relative change of volume on melting, can be derived from the vibrational entropy due to vibrating dislocations, which are introduced into a material on melting.     

Liquid chromatographic analysis of prednisolone, prednisone and their 20-reduced metabolites in perfusion media

A reversed-phase liquid chromatographic assay was developed to quantitate prednisolone, prednisone and the 20 alpha-dihydro and 20 beta-dihydro reduced metabolites of both parent compounds in tissue culture media from in vitro perfusions of the human placental lobule. Steroids were extracted from perfusate, using reversed-phase cartridges, with average recoveries of 95.2% or greater. The internal standard for the analyses was 6 alpha-methylprednisolone. In this assay cortisol coelutes with prednisolone, however, no other significant interferences were found. Assay of each steroid was linear in the range 0-1 microgram/ml. Intra-assay coefficients of variation were measured at 10 and 750 ng/ml with ranges of 3.4% (20 alpha-dihydroprednisone) to 8.8% (20 beta-dihydroprednisolone) and 4.1% (20 beta-dihydroprednisone) to 8.8% (prednisone). The corresponding inter-assay coefficients of variation were 3.3% (20 alpha-dihydroprednisone) to 9.1% (20 beta-dihydroprednisolone) and 1.9% (prednisolone) to 3.5% (prednisone). The analyses utilized two C18 columns which were linked together and maintained at 40 degrees C.     

Decay of the remanent magnetization in the asymmetric spin chain

The dynamics of the one-dimensional spin glass with asymmetric interactions between neighboring spins is considered. We confine ourselves to discrete couplings with values ±J. We show that the algebraic decay of the remanent magnetization of the infinite ±J-spin chain at zero temperature is only valid for symmetric couplings. Our analytical investigations as well as computer simulations show stretched exponential decay for any finite concentration of antisymmetric bonds. Thus, the asymmetric ±J-spin chain shows an asymmetry-induced phase transition at zero temperature.
