Diffractive dissociation of nuclei (Be, Al, W) in collisions with 450 GeV/c protons,pApX, has been measured with the HELIOS spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton synchrotron. The dependence of the single-diffraction cross-section on the nuclear massA can be parametrized as SD mb×A 0.35±0.02, showing the peripheral nature of the process. The differential cross-section dSD=(3.8±0.3)mb ×A 0.35±0.02, is exponential with the slope parameter, increasing from 6.2±0.4 (GeV/c)–2 for beryllium to 7.9±0.5 (GeV/c)–2 for tungsten. The slope parameter also increases with increasing massM X of the diffractively produced state. The rapidity, multiplicity, and transverse-momentum distributions of the particles of the diffractively produced stateX show a longitudinal phase-space population and are remarkably insensitive to the nuclear mass. This, together with theA 1/3 dependence of SD, suggests that the dominant process of nuclear diffractive excitation is the dissociation of single nucleons.Deceased  相似文献

For the anomalous radar reflection from the oversized water drops originating in water-ice phase transition observable in the submillimeter band transparency window of ice [1] we consider the process of extinction, scattering, and absorption in a cloud and atmosphere. Our calculations, which are based on experimental results, show that in the situation when the convective cloud is illuminated from nadir by a narrow-beam submillimeter radar (carried on board an airplane or a satellite), the total extinction and absorption in the cloud and atmosphere is nearby 20dB in the long-wave transparency window of atmosphere. In the central part of submillimeter band these losses may be as high as 40dB.However,the level of losses has no effect on a difference between the radar reflection coefficients for overcooled water and ice existing due to phase transition, and this difference may be over 20dB in the 0.3 to 0.8mm ice transparency window.  相似文献

Two exactly solvable models are presented to describe the dynamic coupling of magnetic transitions within Kramer's degenerate multiplets and lattice vibrations. The magnetic susceptibilities are calculated. It is shown that the spin-boson coupling can reduce the single ion Curic constant at low temperature. For special symmetries the Curie constant may vanish, yielding a temperature independent susceptibility at lowT.  相似文献

Compared to previous bulk magnetic measurements unusual magnetic ordering phenomena were detected by systematic neutron scattering experiments performed in the temperature range of 7 mKT300 K on the series of cubic metallic compounds REPd3 of the rare earths RE=Nd, Tb, Dy, Er, Tm and Yb. Except for ErPd3 withT N =3 K the observed critical temperatures are compatible with the de Gennes scaling. The complexity of long-range magnetic ordering increases with decreasing 4f n occupancy, ranging from ferro- or ferrimagnetism in YbPd3 and DyPd3 via commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering in ErPd3 and TmPd3 [k=(1/2, 1/2, 0)] to incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering of modulated type in TbPd3 and NdPd3. Both RKKY interactions, crystalline electric field, hybridization with 4d states of Pd as well as nuclear spin polarization in the case of RE=Nd appear to be of importance for the magnetic properties of REPd3 systems.  相似文献

A variety of amorphous metals exhibit a characteristic behavior in their acoustic properties at low frequencies which differs from the predictions of the standard tunneling model. We point out that a lower cut-off min for the tunnel matrix element, which is needed for consistency of the tunneling model, leads to an upper bound on relaxation times induced by the conduction electrons. We derive explicit expressions for the velocity shift and internal friction for the normalconducting and superconducting case. It is shown that a maximum relaxation time plays an essential role at audio frequencies. The corresponding change of the acoustic properties is in qualitative agreement with vibrating reed experiments.  相似文献
