Observation of isomeric states in197Bi

The high spin states of¹¹⁹Te, populated in¹¹⁰Pd(¹³C,4n) and¹¹⁰Pd(¹²C,3n) reactions, have been studied through -ray spectroscopy. The level scheme has been established upto a spin of 55/2. Three-quasiparticle states, based on g² _7/2h_11/2 and g_7/2d_5/2h_11/2 configurations, have been identified. The 35/2 and 39/2 states are suggested to be the fully aligned states constituted by five valence h_11/2 ³, g_7/2, d_5/2 quasiparticles.     

A preconditioner for constrained and weighted least squares problems with Toeplitz structure

We study methods for solving the constrained and weighted least squares problem min _x by the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method. HereW = diag (₁, , _m ) with _{1 m} 0, andA ^T = [T ₁ ^T , ,T _k ^T ] with Toeplitz blocksT _l R ^{n × n} ,l = 1, ,k. It is well-known that this problem can be solved by solving anaugmented linear 2 × 2 block linear systemM +Ax =b, A ^T = 0, whereM =W ^–1. We will use the PCG method with circulant-like preconditioner for solving the system. We show that the spectrum of the preconditioned matrix is clustered around one. When the PCG method is applied to solve the system, we can expect a fast convergence rate.Research supported by HKRGC grants no. CUHK 178/93E and CUHK 316/94E.     

Introduction of Benzo[h]quinoline and 1,10-Phenanthroline Subunits by Friedländer Methodology

An improved preparation of 8-amino-7-quinolinecarbaldehyde has been developed. The methyl group of 7-methyl-8-nitroquinoline may be oxidized to an aldehyde by treatment first with dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal followed by sodium periodate. Reduction with iron provides the amino aldehyde. An analogous sequence affords 1-amino-2-naphthalenecarbaldehyde. Friedl?nder condensation of the quinoline derivative with a series of acetylaromatics provides the corresponding 2-aryl-1,10-phenanthrolines. Condensation of either amino aldehyde with 1,3-diacetylbenzene or 2,6-diacetylpyridine provides the expected Friedl?nder product. Similar chemistry is described for reactions of the amino aldehydes with 1,4-diacetylbenzene, 4,4'-diacetylbiphenyl, 1,5-diacetylanthracene, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydroacridine-1,8-dione, and tetracyclo[6.3.0.0.(4,11)0(5,9)]undecane-2,7-dione (TCU-2,7-dione).
