Synthesis of 2-amino-3-hydroxy- and of 2,3-diamino-3H-1,4-benzodiazepines

A new synthesis of 7-chloro-2,3-diamino-5-phenyl-3H-1,4-benzodiazepines is described, which allows for the preparation of compounds bearing the same or different substituents at the 2 and 3 positions, starting from 2-amino-7-chloro-3-hydroxy-5-phenyl-3H-1,4-benzodiazepines.     

Sensitivity Studies of Large Eddy Simulations of Combustion Systems with an Unstructured Implicit Solver

Isothermal as well as reacting turbulent flows are investigated by means of LES with the implicit, unstructured code PRECISE-UNS. Primarily, the swirl burner configuration TECFLAM is simulated isothermal. Calculations with different time step sizes are taken out to examine the influence of the Courant number on the LES solution. In addition, the impact of the spatial resolution is investigated. Next, the jet diffusion flame configuration Sandia Flame D is calculated with the Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) approach. Mean profiles of the velocity components, mixture fraction and temperature as well as their variances are compared to experimental data. (© 2011 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)     

Characterization of Pd-Cu alloy nanoparticles on gamma-Al2O3-supported catalysts

Cu-Pd/Al2O3 bimetallic catalysts have been characterized by XRD, TEM, and EDX techniques. The surface structure has been investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy of low-temperature adsorbed CO in the reduced and in the oxidized state. Evidence has been provided of the formation of Cu-Pd alloy nanoparticles, both of the alpha-phase (disordered fcc) and of the beta-phase (ordered CsCl-type). IR spectra suggest that Cu likely decorates the edges while Pd mostly stays at the main faces. Part of copper disperses as Cu+ on the support even after reduction. The presence of copper seems to modify strongly the sate of oxidized Pd centers in oxidized high-Pd content materials. The redox chemistry of the system, where Pd is reduced more easily than Cu, appears to be very complex.     

Production of octadienal in the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum

[reaction: see text] Marine diatoms produce alpha,beta,gamma,delta-unsaturated aldehydes that have detrimental effects on the reproduction of their natural predators. The production of these defensive metabolites is suggested to involve enzymatic oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. In this paper, feeding experiments with labeled precursor provide clear evidence in support of the origin of octadienals 1 and 2 from 6,9,12-hexadecatrienoic acid (5), thus proving the involvement of novel lipoxygenase/lyase activity for the oxidation of C(16) fatty acids.     

Structure elucidation and 1H/13C NMR spectral assignments of four trabectedin related compounds

This article presents the structure elucidation of four new compounds, formed during the hemisynthetic preparation of trabectedin, an anti-tumor natural product from Ecteinascidia turbinata. We report herein on the use of UV, MS and NMR spectroscopic data along with (1)H and (13)C spectral assignments obtained by means of 1D and 2D homo- and heteronuclear NMR techniques.     

Catenation and Aggregation of Multi‐Cavity Coordination Cages

A series of metal‐mediated cages, having multiple cavities, was synthesized from Pd^II cations and tris‐ or tetrakis‐monodentate bridging ligands and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X‐ray methods. The peanut‐shaped [Pd₃L¹₄] cage deriving from the tris‐monodentate ligand L¹ could be quantitatively converted into its interpenetrated [5Cl@Pd₆L¹₈] dimer featuring a linear {[Pd‐Cl‐]₅Pd} stack as an unprecedented structural motif upon addition of chloride anions. Small‐angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments showed that the cigar‐shaped assembly with a length of 3.7 nm aggregates into mono‐layered discs of 14 nm diameter via solvophobic interactions between the hexyl sidechains. The hepta‐cationic [5Cl@Pd₆L¹₈] cage was found to interact with polyanionic oligonucleotide double‐strands under dissolution of the aggregates in water, rendering the compound class interesting for applications based on non‐covalent DNA binding.     

Excess enthalpies of aqueous solutions of polyols at 25°

The excess enthalpies of aqueous solutions of nine polyols were determined at 25°C and reported in the virial form. The most interesting and new feature of this family of solutes is that the sign of the enthalpic pair interaction coefficients h_xx is positive for the first members of the series and negative for the higher homologues. Other points are the large differences found among the values of h_xx for stereoisomers, whereas pairs of enantiomers show the same values within experimental errors. An application of the group additivity method is also discussed.
