Electric field effect on low temperature nanoscale oxidation

The influence of electric fields on the low temperature oxidation of individual nanoscale tungsten wires was investigated. In the experiments at room temperature, the nanowires were biased as anode opposite to a macroscopic cathode and H₂O-vapor with a pressure of 10^?7–10¹ mbar was provided as oxygen source. Under the influence of an electric field, a dramatic change of the oxidation behavior is observed with the formation of several 10 nm thick oxide layers for electric fields exceeding a threshold. The chemical composition of the layers formed is determined with laser-assisted atom probe tomography to be slightly understoichiometric WO₃. After an initial period of fast growth, the oxidation rate later rapidly decreases to immeasurable low values. Evaluation of the electric field distribution in the vicinity of the sample by the finite element method reveals that oxide formation only proceeds if a critical field in the range of 0.7–5.0 V/nm, depending on the H₂O-pressure, is present. This critical field is attributed to a field-activated reaction of H₂O at the oxide–vapor interface. Besides for tungsten, field-induced oxidation is also observed for aluminum and p-doped silicon and thus apparently is a widely material independent phenomenon.     

Further New Bis‐cembranoids from the Hainan Soft Coral Sarcophyton tortuosum

Two new bis‐cembranoids, ximaolides F ( 1 ) and G ( 2 ), were isolated from the Hainan soft coral Sarcophyton tortuosum. The structures and relative configurations of the two new compounds were elucidated by the combination of spectroscopic methods, chemical conversion of ximaolide F ( 1 ) into ximaolide G ( 2 ), and comparison with related model compounds.

Regions of positivity for polyharmonic Green functions in arbitrary domains

The Green function for the biharmonic operator on bounded domains with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions is in general not of fixed sign. However, by extending an idea of Z. Nehari, we are able to identify regions of positivity for Green functions of polyharmonic operators. In particular, the biharmonic Green function is considered in all space dimensions. As a consequence we see that the negative part of any such Green function is somehow small compared with the singular positive part.

Zur Kenntnis der linearen Pentazenreihe

Zusammenfassung Die Absorptionsspektren des linearen Pentazenchinons und des Pentazendichinons sowie der Derivate des letzteren werden mittels desZeissschen Spektrographen aufgenommen und in Form von logarithmischen Extinktionskurven graphisch dargestellt. Sie liegen an der Grenze vom Ultraviolett gegen den sichtbaren Spektralbereich. Das Maximum der Hauptbande ist nur beim Monochinon erreichbar. An Hand der teils bei Lösung in Benzol, teils bei Lösung in Pyridin erhaltenen Ergebnisse wird der Einfluß des Lösungsmittels diskutiert. Es bleibt, trotz Einführung von verschiedenen Substituenten, bei allen Derivaten des Pentazendichinons derselbe Extinktionskurventypus erhalten, entsprechend der klassischen Theorie der chromophoren Elektronen-konstellation. Die eingeführten Substituenten bewirken auch bei dieser Körperklasse nur eine ihrem Charakter entsprechende Lage- und Breitenänderung der Banden. Schließlich wird die chemische Konstitution in Beziehung gebracht zum optischen Verhalten und gezeigt, daß zwischen - und-Derivaten hinsichtlich Absorption kein wesentlicher Unterschied besteht, während sich bei Eintritt des Substituenten in die Mesostellung auch diesbezüglich durch das Auftreten einer neuen Bande ein deutlicher Unterschied zwischen seitenring- und mesosubstituierten Abkömmlingen offenbart.     

Suberoretisteroids A–E,Five New Uncommon Polyoxygenated Steroid 24‐Ketals from the Hainan Gorgonian Suberogorgia reticulata

Five new uncommon polyoxygenated steroids, namely suberoretisteroids A–E ( 1 – 5 ), were isolated from the gorgonian Suberogorgia reticulata, never studied so far. The structures and relative configurations of these new compounds were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectral analysis. This work led to the structural revision of some steroids previously found in the Indian gorgonian Gorgonella umbraculum.
