Stereoselective total synthesis of (+)-strictifolione and (6R)-6-[(4R,6R)-4,6-dihydroxy-10-phenyldec-1-enyl]-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-one by Prins reaction and olefin cross-metathesis

Prins and olefin cross-metathesis reactions were used as the key steps for the stereoselective total synthesis of (+)-strictifolione and (6R)-6-[(4R,6R)-4,6-dihydroxy-10-phenyldec-1-enyl]-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-one. Removal of MOM protecting groups under neutral conditions using CeCl₃·7H₂O is an attractive addition to the present strategy.     

Generation of aperiodic tilings with fivefold symmetry by the method of intersecting decagons and diffraction from finite size tilings

A method for generating aperiodic tilings with five fold symmetry is discussed here. Basic patterns formed within decagons can be used to fill two dimensional space, by matching such suitable patterns. It appears to be possible to generate perfect tilings without retracing already established coordinates imposing conditions at the initial stages of generating them. Various possible ways to generate tilings, when perfectness is not required, are discussed. The calculated diffraction patterns for some representative finite size tilings are shown. There are subtle differences in the intensities of peaks in the diffraction patterns corresponding to different finite size tilings constructed using intersecting decagons. These effects persist for a larger number of scatterers in weak peaks than in strong peaks. They are unaffected by an introduction of systematic disorder. These effects could be termed as the finite size boundary effects. There are also small shifts in the peak positions owing to the finite size effects. The possibility of formation of large approximate square cells in large tilings is shown.

Composite phospholipid-calcium carbonate microparticles: influence of anionic phospholipids on the crystallization of calcium carbonate

The synthesis and characterization of calcium carbonate microparticles by reaction of calcium chloride and ammonium bicarbonate in the presence of negatively charged phospholipid mixtures of negative and zwitterionic phospholipids has been reported. Negatively charged phospholipids influence the crystal morphology of calcium carbonate and induce the formation of thermodynamically less stable veterite polymorph as opposed to calcite polymorph. The phospholipids are entrapped in the calcium carbonate microparticles during the crystallization process, with a uniform distribution of phospholipids in the interior of the microparticles. This phenomenon was exploited to encapsulate a model hydrophobic fluorophore, the tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline)ruthenium(II) dichloride complex, to simulate encapsulation of hydrophobic drug molecules. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals that, in these microparticles, the calcium carbonate and the phospholipid exhibit strong interactions.     

Microdetermination of indoles with N-bromoacetamide in acetic acid medium

Summary A titrimetric method for the microdetermination of indole and its derivatives withN-bromoacetamide is described. It has been observed thatN-bromoacetamide brominates the compound containing indole nucleus in the presence of acetic acid. The usual reaction time is 15 minutes and the reaction is carried out at room temperature. The relative errors are less than ±1.5% at the mg level.

Femtosecond laser ablation of ZnO nanorods for two-photon-pumped random lasing and optical data storage

Femtosecond laser ablation based on two-photon absorption was employed to cut ZnO nanorods into uniform ZnO nanoparticles of deep subwavelength size. The fabricated ZnO nanoparticles possess a shorter mean transport length for photons at the emission wavelength and a much smaller scattering cross section at the pump wavelength, leading to highly efficient two-photon-pumped random lasing with a low threshold of ??8?mJ/cm². It was demonstrated that the significant enhancement in two-photon luminescence after the irradiation of femtosecond laser pulses could also be utilized for realizing optical data storage.
